What to put in a gas fireplace?

Hello,
I have a gas fireplace with a flue and chimney. What I am mostly interested is in heating my living room. I was wondering what can I put in my gas fireplace to get heat? The options are:
1. Nothing at all.
2. Wood logs.
3. Vented gas logs
4. Unvented gas logs.
5. The guy at safeway said some kind of stones are availabe at home depot
