fireplace question

How can i tell the difference between a gas and wood burning fireplace? My home was built in 2004. it looks like gas logs have been the only thing to burn. there is a gas pipe that runs under the gas logs. And on the hearth, there is a key looking thing, i guess to turn the gas on to start the fire. I wanted to know if i could use wood instead? thanks

You probably have a prefabricated unit with a built in gas log set up. There should be an owner's manual with info to help you. If you do not have one (perhaps you are not the original owners, and it was never passed on to you), a neighbor might be able to help you, if yours is one of several similar dwelling units.

Usually, prefab units are built to burn wood and are retrofitted with gas logs, but that alteration is SUPPOSED to be done in such a way that you can convert back to wood if you want to.

A competent chimney cleaner should be able to answer your questions. In any event, you will want to have the condition of the chimney checked before burning wood.
