Fireplace shuts off pilot when switched on

Hi,

I moved into a house that has a gas fireplace and I'm having trouble lighting it. I'm able to get the pilot light lit. It burns fine and stays lit. I turn the control knob to on. When I switch the on/off switch to 'On' however, there is a click and the pilot light clicks off. The same thing happens if I put the switch to 'RS' and turn the wall switch to on. It's like there is some safety switch that is being triggered, but I can't figure out what it is.

My fireplace is a Majco(acquired by Majestic) G800piLP

Any ideas?

You should try and source a owners manual if you do not have one. Generally once the pilot is lit the thermocouple that is in contact with the pilot sees temperature indicating the pilot is on but must be up to temp before switching to the on position. This ensures the main gas valve will not open without a pilot flame. If the pilot shuts off after it has been lit for 60 seconds you are looking at a new thermocouple. Cleaning the thermocouple with an Emory cloth may help.
