Quadrafire 7100, help needed.

We just had ours installed and are having real limestone put around it. The mason only put the limestone up to the silver box portion of the unit, not the black face like we told him. Now we will have a rather large since to fill in wiry mortar. I read this is not ideal, but wanted to see if anyone here could comment on that large of a space between the face and our stone. Thanks.
