fire on ice

how long will a campfire last on a frozen lake? we live next to a drainage pond. neighbors skate on it. last night they built a good sized fire on the ice. seems odd. fire would melt ice and slowly put itself out? was burning for a few hours. yes i assume it is related to size of fire and thickness of ice. they went in house and i walked down to check it out. seemed to be on ice with no barrier underneath it. or i could not see anything.
