Fireplace Insert Installation

We have a brick fireplace and want to put an insert in it to make it more efficent. We never yse it now. We have gas logs installed inside and a glass screen. Is this something that a homeowner can do himself or does it need to be proffessionally installed. We went to one fp store and they gave us a ballpark figure of 3500.00. I am not that cold thanks jimbo

You are in the neighborhood of $2500 to $3000 for a professionally installed insert.
But what type of insert are you looking at? Gas or wood?
But if I were you I would wait until summer to do anything. Right now is the PEAK time for these guys and the prices are at the top. Wait until they need the work. Around late June. The prices will be lower.

since it is gas now, if you plan on using wood you will need a good inspection. the current liner may not handle the heat of a wood fire and you may have to either get a new one or stick with gas heat.

i love my wood burning insert, turn on teh blwoer and i can cook us out the room if necessary.

Do you work in the business Christopherh? Just wondering re the 'peak' time for these guys. I've been quizzing around and it seemed like now was actually a slower time, with some offering discounts etc. It seemed that most people that wanted a stove etc for winter had already gotten one installed before winter (so summer/fall would be busy).
