Gas fireplace unused for several years

Hello, we are from South Florida with no experience with gas fireplaces. My son is closing on a house in NC and during the inspection, there was no gas in the tank to inspect the fireplace. Previous owners have moved several hours away and were unable to arrange for someone to fill the tank, so it has not been inspected nor has it been determined that it is in proper working order, beyond owners assertion that it works fine. My son cannot get gas until he legally owns the home, so inspection before closing is out. I'm worried about the length of time the fireplace has gone unused, 2-3 years due to mild winters. Is it safe to just fill the tank and turn it on after being unused all that time? Thank you for any guidance you can provide!
