Ugly gas logs FMI

My new FMI Mission 36 gas b-vent fireplace has a beautiful fire, but the logs are ugly - there's a big V in front, log in back and flames come thru center not touching logs. Installer claims logs are not supposed to be touched by flame - it cools flame and causes soot. Sounds ridiculous to me. I am disappointed; brochure shows flames touching logs. Anyone have experience or knowledge about the unit or the theory? Thanks.

Installer is right, but the tiny amount of soot you'll get with VENTED gas logs will go out the stack and is insignificant compared to other fuels. So, if you don't mind a little black soot on your logs, move them to where they make you happy. There's also the gas valve and other hardware to be aware of, so you take a risk that by moving the logs it could negatively impact that.
