painted AND plastered fireplace?!

So I decided to strip my brick fireplace. It was painted white, and loked like it had many layers underneath, due to the lack of detail of the brick i could see. So off the first layer went. I got down to the orange layer, which i thought was just stubborn paint, but after gooping it up really good with the most toxic, potent stripper i could find...IT WOULDNT BUDGE. As i was scraping it it actually started to feel and look like i was scraping at a clay pot; as if it was plastered, or layered with something other than (and thicker than) paint. WHAT IS IT?? or do i actually have orange brick with orange mortar?! highly unlikely. Do you think i should try to chip away at it with a hammer and screwdriver? i haven't tried that yet, only scraping....
