Have yet to hear from the newspaper industry asking for a bailout/loan..

Tribune Co. considering Chapter 11: WSJ

Miami Herald is up for sale, as are many other publications..

The main problem confronting newspapers and magazines, to a lesser extent,is that people can get their news at a moments notice,either via 24 hour newschannels or the internet...

By the time i get my morning paper,i've read all the important news on the web..

For many, there's nothing like the tactile pleasure of picking up a newspaper. The Washington Post was a refuge on the Metro before hitting the street on Connecticut and L five days a week. I still get the same feeling when I read our local - and not really stellar - paper with my coffee in the AM. I get the basics of the national and world news with the preponderance being the local news. To full in the blanks nationally and worldwide, I rely on the Nightly News Hour, Nightly Business Report, etc. (I don't have cable) And I also read the Post and several other papers on line. To round things out, I'll scroll through the "Hot Topics" forum where many posters are aware of everything and have no end of opinions to share.

Since papers rely more heavily on advertising revenues than subscriber rolls, they're surely feeling the pinch. I don't know if print media will disappear wholesale, but papers are disappearing in other ways - ours recently became an inch less wide (it IS much easier to handle and fold), some old features disappeared, opinion pages were revamped, sections combined as opposed to appearing separately, a lot of old content reappearing on their web site.

In light of technology, papers might become dinosaurs. I'd like to get through my lifetime without having to see one in a museum though.

I can't really say how deep but definetely more then a few inches! My guess is 8-10 inches or more. The book I had, showed pictures of it but I did figure it wouldn't really be that effective if maybe for the first year.(new seeds flying in from all over the world)I pulled all the weeds and their roots before covering with the newspaper. The least it can do is decay and add something to the soil right? I just tend to worry too much about chemicals getting into what I'm eating lol. If I didn't use mulch on my flower beds tho...I don't think I could keep up my fight against weeds LOL Three beds are/will be I think 12 feet by 6 feet. Two beds are/will be 9 feet by 5 feet. (My dad is building them so I don't say a word and let him do the dimensions lol) I have not really begun planning anything out officially but I would like to do tomatoes, peppers, an eggplant or two, corn, carrots and onions. God willing, I will have a total of 5 beds to work with. As far as room, we have almost an acre of crappy hills (i hate them. a slight slope would have been great but not these) with some flatter land. We had strawberry patches all over the backyard but we made a new bed for them in the front of the house which freed up the room for these raised beds! I wanna try pumpkin and watermelon but those will be on the back hill which we don't have much on besides some apple trees and rose of sharons :) ~michael

BUT - no one has addressed how one PLANTS through newspaper. I have a lot of bulbs to put down tomorrow. I planned to poke or cut holes in the paper - or depending on how well I can kneel and bend tomorrow - leave a narrow (uncovered) row to poke bulbs into. How do YOU plant through 3 - 5 sheets of wet paper? cora" I suspect bulbs would have no problems coming up thru the paper so you could just set them out, lay in the paper then mulch and you would be fine. As far as planting out I primarily use this in my veggie beds. I lay the paper out over the bed and simply poke/slice in a hole with the Hori Hori (See Link Below) where I need a planting hole but you could easily poke thru it with a dibble or even your finger if you were putting in seed. While it is wet the newspaper is very easy to work with. After I lay in the transplants I mulch with straw or grass clippings. Wow, Mona. That is a lot of newspaper, four to ten layers. I would have to save newspaper forever to get that much for my big bed in back. I have done it before in one of my small beds on the side of my house. If I want to mulch before summer, my only chance is next weekend, as my friend with the truck is going away for six months after that, so I'll only have a week's worth of paper. Maybe I can use my neighbor's as well. Last year I used newspaper on the bed on the north side of my house. I was told that it makes it more durable to do that. The layers stick together better. That worked well for me.. But it was small bed. I will call around tomorrow, but so far I've only found one nursery, 45 min. away that carries the small pine bark. I have not seen it at Lowes, Home Depot, etc. HD only has the big nuggets. i'll call more tomorrow. For my front bed, i think the mini will look pretty. Daylilies are delicate looking and I think the small mulch will look better. When you say the bigger, do you mean regular size pine bark nuggets? I had never thought of mulching pots. I will have to try that. I don't have any daylilies in pots, but other things. Maybe I'll use the bigger mulch around my Magnolia tree in the same bed. Do you thik that would look okay? If I can't get the truck for the mini pine bark I don't know what I'll do. It is only sold in one place that I've found, and not by the bag. Do you think a bunch of sheets would work for a tarp.I read Lilynut's post wrong. I don't have anything to cover the mulch. I was thinking a tarp to cover the bottom of the truck. I do two things.....when I pass on the baby caps I crochet for charity I place them a dozen to a bag and just hand in the bagful. Keep them organized and neat. I also have donated them to a local charity shop where they bag up donated wool, crochet thread, smaller kids toys and the like. They have cut down the bags when packaging smaller amounts..you might want to ask if any are needed next time you are out thrift store shopping. I've also seen them used in garage sales to bag fabric etc. If someone is planning a sale it is a way to keep things neat on the table and not loosing pieces or items. Puzzles and game pieces come to mind. Budster

if the papers cease to exist, what will the dog poop on? what will we line our bird cages with? oh no! oh wait, can always use g.m., ford, and chrys. stock cetificates.

Hi folks,

For the dog - paper cups, plates, spoons and bags from the food take-out store.

Store flyers are 'for the birds"!

Better upgrade the schools - so the kids can read whatever newspapers survive!

I would so hate to not have my paper!!! but I wonder if they will be able to survive the loss of advertising to the internet, like free classified sites such as Craigslist. The internet and TV news just does not allow me to absorb and consider information like reading it in print.

Yes, but the main source of news on the Internet is from online versions of newspapers. And the online versions are not slef-supporting. If the papers themselves go away, so will the online versions.

This discussion reminds me of the Republican Congressman several years ago who wanted to cut funding for NOAA and the National Weather Service because he said that the private sector performed the job better and cheaper, and he pointed to the success of The Weather Channel, not realizing of course, that The Weather Channel received their information from - - ta da - - the National Weather Service!

What's next, save the newspaper industry?
