New wrinkle on an old scam

Probably many of you have received one/some of those messages telling you that you'd won some lottery in a distant land, to contact such and such a person, using code number so and so, within such a number of days.

Our national broadcaster reported yesterday that the R.C.M.P. reports that there have been thousands of letters mailed recently, mainly from Montreal, and mainly to U.S. addresses.

Including notification that the recipient had won a lottery for a large amount and that the enclosed cheque was for an initial payout, to enable the recipient to pay some charges, fees, taxes and other payments required related to the payout of the large amount, which were to be sent to XXXX address(es).

The original cheque being bogus, in a few days it is returned as uncollectable ... and the sucker's account is out whatever number of dollars that they'd forwarded to wherever.

Careful, everyone ... the rubber in those cheques is even thinner than in some of the low-profile tires that we've seen on the (city) roads recently ... but it bounces even better than they, I think.

When you see a sign at a tourist trap, "Beware of pickpockets ... Watch your wallet" ... don't pat your wallet - that provides a roadmap for a resident pickpocket.

Enjoy your week, everyone.
