Has anyone been laid-off? Or had been laid-off but found a job?

Hi - I'm a new member. My husband was laid off 6 weeks ago. He is 57 years old - a lot of stress around here! Just trying to take a pulse - is anyone else out there dealing with this? How are you managing? I'd love to hear from anyone who has actually found a job. I think I'm just looking for a ray of hope. We're in the Boston area.

Thanks so much, Kate

Yes, we have been talking about it in the thread linked below.

Welcome!

One resource my friend uses for lower cost food is Angel Food Ministries. You pay $30 and get a big box of food. Around Boston, there are churches in Roxbury, Brockton, Woburn, and Jamaica Plains that participate in the program. Learn more at AngelFoodMinistries.com.

My DH was laid off - AGAIN. He is early 50's - works in sales and marketing in industrial manufacturing - bad place to be recently. This wasn't the worst thing since he was living and working 450 miles away. Someone he did business with at this job put him in contact with another colleague that he thought might be in need of someone like him. They met this week and DH received a great offer on the spot. This was entirely the result of networking - never advertised - he never even submitted a resume before meeting with the new company. All based on word of mouth referral. Networking was key - advertised opportunities for DH have been nil. He was out of work for two months.

Oh Gibby, so much turmoil lately! Is the new job closer to home than the last one? My DH does not like his job because there is little work to do. He sits and takes classes online some days. I keep hoping they will give him more to do because all he can think about is how it will look on his resume if things don't start happening. He is grumpier than when he was unemployed recently. Good news is we are planning a four day get-away for October. :-) When does your DH start the newest job?

Kate - how are things going for you and your DH? Any luck? Did you get any ideas from our thread?

Nancy - yes closer to home - home office in fact.
Fortunately he will be doing quite a bit of travel. I'm not so sure how well we'd get along if we were together every day. We've pretty much had one or both of us traveling some during our entire 31 years of marriage.

I'm pleasantly surprised at the short period of unemployment. I expected at least a year!

Nancy - he starts tomorrow! YAY! Hope this time works out for the long haul.

Hi Ladies,

Sorry I've been out of touch. DH is still unemployed. Has 2 possible contracting positions through a recruiter but that is it. He is in software quality assurance of medical devices. I'm a teacher, so have just recently gone back to school and it's probably for the best. I was getting so anxious and over-involved while home with him. Although we are so hoping for a permanent job somewhere, right now one of these contracting positions would certainly be welcome.

Kate - you don't happen to be located in MN do you? I know a lot of people in medical software and medical device industries

Fly in the ointment - DH thought the release he signed when he left old job released him from non-compete - not so fast. Previous employer has contacted his new employer and put the brakes on due to the non-compete agreement. His start date at new job has been deferred until he works that out. He has talked to new and former employer and it sounds like they will be able to work out some reasonable considerations that will not preclude him from taking the new job. And of course he has now talked to an attorney - something he probably should have done before rather than after the fact. Never a dull moment around here....

RE: Has anyone been laid-off? Or had been laid-off but found a

That sucks gibby. Is a non-compete enforceable if you are laid off?

 o
RE: Has anyone been laid-off? Or had been laid-off but found a

Yes it's enforceable unless you make sure the documents you sign when you are laid off release you from the non-compete. Fortunately I think DH will be able to work through this. He had further conversations with old employer at the end of last week and he is getting a lot of green lights. I think he just has to work with the attorney to draft a document that overrides the non-compete that narrows down the scope of what he can't do during the remainder of the one year period - one that does not preclude him from going to work for the new employer. The old employer has said at least three times that they didn't tell the new company they couldn't hire him though the non-compete says he can't go to work for a competitor in a "similar" industry.

RE: Has anyone been laid-off? Or had been laid-off but found a

Kate - how are things going for your DH? I reread your post and see you are in Boston - long way from MN so I'm of no help. Mine has worked out the non-compete issue and starts on Monday - barring any surprises between now and then. He was surprised last time - right before he was supposed to start.

RE: Has anyone been laid-off? Or had been laid-off but found a

Moral for the next time -- if employer wants you to sign a non-compete clause, make sure that they are willing to fund it -- otherwise, no money, no restrictions beyond 30 days...
How long does inside knowledge last before it becomes obsolete these days of the Internet anyway???
