Does son(waiter) have to pay IRS tip wages quarterly

My son got a job as a waiter at a very nice restaurant and makes very good tips. I know he will be taxed on that at the end of the year and probably owe money-but somebody said they have to pay the IRS quarterly not yearly. How do I find out if that is correct or not?

Not quarterly, but every paycheck. If he receives a regular paycheck from the restaurant it is his responsibility to claim his tips through them. Much easier to claim them at the restaurant. Every one of the restuarants I've worked for were very helpful in regards to how to claim the tips. He should be having this taken out each pay period, not the end of the year. The IRS can ding him for not having enough withheld (I realize that common practice to not withhold enough.) Most likely the restaurant will hold out enough to at least pull him up to minimum wage. Our state min. wage is higher than the national and my son's employer claimed $4 per hour in tips, so he ends up owing very little at the end of the year. Seems like all my paycheck was good for was paying those taxes.

I am to estimate and make tax payments on income that is not taxable when I receive it.

Example...dividends, and farm rent. I receive the packet of forms and envelopes to pay them quarterly, but my tax person told me as long as I pay the estimated tax b4 the end of the 4th quarter, there will not be a penalty. The end of the 4th quarter is Jan 15th.

If rthummer were a friend or family member, I would be horrified to be associated. Scarlett2001, If I was not happy with my hair and had it corrected, I definitely would not tip. Yes, items purchased in connection with a business venture are tax deductible, so rthummer's post again makes no sense. No, your stylist shouldn't be overly compensated for taking much too long to accomplish a task. There is no profession other than working at a convenience store that does not require some level of training. Even the convenience store clerk must learn how to run a cash register these days. The salary disparity makes me crazy as well. Ugh, I wish I never opened this thread as by blood is boiling. One last thing, any salon owner that accepts a tip is tacky, pure and simple. Low class. I am surprised that the powers that be at GW didn't pull this thread when it started getting ugly.

I'm not sure about whether they get a "free ride" on tips from the IRS. Be worth asking and checking out. It'd also be interesting to know if they're paid hourly or by the delivery, or some other method. Tipping is a variable thing. I always base it on service. There's times when a tip isn't called for but I will tip anyway. For a company to tell me I *can't* tip if I want to, all I can say is kiss me between the back pockets. I do not tip police officers, politicians and similar for obvious reasons. I have never received such outstanding service from a "letter carrier" to warrant a tip - more the opposite. (I should be demanding refunds.) Plus I have an aversion to tipping someone so overpaid to start with. And to set flat amounts, 15%-20% or whatever, would you tip the same for the delivery driver who might deliver a $200 (or $1,000.00) prescription? If they set one bag in the door, said thank you and was on their way, maybe a couple bucks would be in order, especially if they use a company vehicle. If they are carrying a lot of bags, several trips, and maybe heavy stuff and especially during inclement weather, I'd be inclined to give more. Just putting it in a different room rather than drop it at the door wouldn't by itself seem like a big thing to me but if they put things away, that would be extra service to me. If the same person delivered regularly, that could make a difference in some cases. I would probably base it more on the the actual dollar amount of the tip going to them rather than a percent. I really think the amount of work and effort should factor into the amount of compensation. But more importantly, what's your financial situation? Can you afford it? Don't spend money you can't afford to spend just because everyone else can or sometimes do. A dollar or two and a sincere "thank you" means a lot to many people, especially if it's helping out a person who's handicapped, elderly or otherwise on limited income. And if this is the case, you have no need to feel bad about what you tip and needn't feel compelled to keep up with the Jones'. Now if you can affort it, then that's a different story. I have been using a similar system to Dick Solomon's though I don't put it out in front of them! But the happier they make me, the more they get. The more they displeasure me, the less they get. I consider it more of a "commission based" tip. The more you do, the more you get. If you put in your time and give no effort beyond the minimum to keep your job, you get the basic rate. "Workers at fast food places,pizza parlors and other take out places get more than minimum wage. Workers at full service places get minimum wage and work for tips." That is not true everywhere. There are only two states that I know of that insist that restaurant workers get minimum wage and even that is very recent legislation. There is a separate wage for tipped workers that hovers at around $2/hr. "As far as throwing some plastic cutlery and napkins into a bag and handing it over, I really don't think that requires a tip" "I don't tip the person bagging my groceries, why should I tip someone who hands me a bag?" If you are talking about a McDonalds or some place that specialized in to-go food then no it is not necessary. They get minimum wage at least and maybe even more in some places, and the place is set up for this style service so that the whole process is done efficiently. If you are ordering to-go from a full service restaurant, then there is just as much work to service a to-go order as there is to bring it to the table if not more. The items have to be picked up from the various hot/cold/grill/fryer stations and transfered. The cooks in most places keep bags and containers stored near the grills and do not bag anything up and the server must do this. It's a PITA and takes time away from servicing tipping tables who are probably wondering "where their waitress went" when they don't see them for some time. The worker who rings the order is taxed on the amount they ring by the IRS so if you do not tip on a to-go order they lose money right out of their pocket by servicing you. True. I agree the tipping thing has gotten out of hand. More and more restaurants are not paying minimum wage to bartenders and busboys anymore and paying them the legal 'tip wage'. This creates a lot of tension among the staff regarding the divvying up of tips. Managers are now taking a cut of tips - even owners. Lots of places require staff to tip the hostess and sometimes even the cooks. The coat check person and even the lounge piano player may be working for tips only, and not even get a wage at all. The whole custom of tipping goes back very far to an era where workers did not get paychecks and everyone was paid directly. I'm talking about the Middle Ages. I would like to see all workers get a wage and let the whole tipping thing fade away. I work in the restaurant business.

This was a chain restaurant, & the bill for 2 dinners was just under $40. Servers in those places aren't "professional" waiters who are likely to make good incomes. They're likely young people trying to support themselves or pay school expenses. "Professional" waiters work at places where dinner for 2 would be $150 or more, & where no diner would dare leave a chintzy tip. which has...what?...to do with punishing a harried waitress for forgetting or not realizing that she should have brought smaller bills.

But OP is referring to her son, who is an employee. Employee wages don't have anything to do with quarterly stuff. It's his responsiblity to claim all of his wages (which includes the tips), so why wait and take the hit at the end of the year? Less painful to do it as you go.

I guess because he gets tips his base pay is like 1.25 an hour so even if they take taxes out- there is a big gaps between what he makes and what they can take out. Of course my son is Mr. Irresponsible and wouldn't do anything intelligent like actually ask his company. All he told me is they make him fill out a tip sheet every night. I am sure his restaurant turns that in at the end of year as salary- and I am betting he will owe quite a bit-but I wasn't sure how to make him pay through the year

I'd really recommend letting your accountant handle this. When DD was a waitress, I gave up. The forms and regs were so complicated that it was well worth the money to just turn it all over to our accountant. And I'm sure the system hasn't simplified in the past few years. It won't cost that much--just send him to the right professional, and you'll know it's done right.

Good idea assalea. DH is a CPA, so I don't bother with it anymore, but I made him show me DS's return and we were looking at which box the taxes were recorded on the W-2. Of course that made the big difference in if Social Security had been held out or just federal taxes (we don't have a state income tax here.) Of course, he then had to go off on some tangent about IF there were trusts, yada, yada, yada. The man drives me crazy. All I asked was a simple question since he's only dealt with DS for the past few years.

Could your son average out his tips and get an approximate amount from that which would go to tax and then ask his employer to take out that extra amount. I have to do that as my employer doesn't take out enough even with me as married tax at single rate.

Also might want to check his paycheck as they may be smart and already take out the tax based on the sheet they have to fill out. My best friend gets tips and that is what the place she works for does.
