Cashing 'c/o' checks

My daughter has a check coming that's made out to ie: Charlie Brown c/o Brenda Brown, we're mother/daughter. Mom is "Brenda", what can't I deposit or cash it she's 300 miles away? My bank says it must read "or". Also, the issuing bank(large)says that our bank can call for verification of funds when the check is deposited(to avoid a hold) but our bank says that a phone call is no guarantee, that I need to call the issuing bank in a couple of days to see if the check cleared, information which they may or may not give me, then I call my bank and they'll call... Who's the picky/pushy one here?

C/O is regarded as your daughter using you and your address as a mail stop. If your name isn't on your daughter's bank account (the "or"), you can't endorse the check for cashing out or depositing and the bank is within its rights not to let you make either transaction. I don't know about the hold aspect of this; verification the check issuer has sufficient funds? I am only familiar with holds when dealing with transactions of 10k or more. But if the account has more than 10k in it, the hold period tends to be a non starter.

You can send the check to your daughter, she can endorse it and send it back to you for cashing or depositing. But it's never wise to be mailing endorsed checks - if it falls into the wrong hands, it can be cashed by anyone.

There's bound to be someone who works in the banking industry on these forums who knows the ins and outs of this.

In my experience, you can "deposit" just about anything, including a candybar wrapper, if you use an envelope at the outside ATM.

They'll usually immediately credit your account first (and even let you immediately draw it if you have matching funds they can hold until clearing of the check,) and then check on check clearability later (and adjust if its a candybar wrapper... as well as prolly have "a little chat" ;~P

Checks not directly made to you are almost always cleared (even if/when you accidentally deposit one that's made to an entirely dif name, without a "pay to the order" or "care of" or even without an endorsement.)

Ray, thank you for tearing yourself away from the orchids long enough to post the pix. Nice treat. When I was brand new to orchids, the annual AOS meeting was held in Minneapolis. It was my first show, and I looked at exhibits and vendors' plants so hard and so long that I got disoriented and had to go eat lunch. WOC must be 50 times more overwhelming. Wow. Keep your food and water intake adequate so you'll have the energy necessary to make all those difficult buying decisions. :) Whitecat8

C & O Nursery..not a good experience

I ordered several peach trees from C & O nursery. They advertise on their website that they had an "Internet Special". When I got my bill I was not given the Internet special, and I was also charged a box fee that was never mentioned. I give them credit for working with these fees and reducing the original bill, but their trees were not healthy. Here is the letter I wrote when I sent my payment in, which they did cash. So far I have not heard from them since they received my letter and check: Marilyn, I am sending payment for the peach trees that I ordered. As you are aware, I am extremely disappointed with the quality of the trees. Actually, it seem so me that the trees were grown well and were strong at first, but they appeared, upon arrival, to be completely desiccated. I knew immediate when I opened the package that they would have a hard time. The trees were dry and seemed to have had moss or even mold washed off of them before shipment. I was not surprised when they did not come out of dormancy right away. After following your directions and pruning them severely, they still did not "jump start" as you mentioned they should. The trees all finally did sprout, but I was so very disappointed that none of the live branches were over 3 feet. The Early Improved Elberta was the tallest at 28", and from there it went down. The PF-11 sprouted at 25", the OÂHenry at 19", the PF-1 at 8", and the PF-17 has its only sprout at just 3"! I am not even sure that the PF-17 is not going to be just rootstock. Now I will need to make a new central leader out of all of these trees, as they are all too short to allow to spread at their heights, even the tallest. These trees, with their tender new shoots will need to be brought inside for their first Colorado winter if they are going to survive at all. Because I have run my own business and understand that a companyÂs reputation is practically everything, I have not, until now, been vocal about my disappointment. I appreciate that you were willing to work with me regarding the prices, but yet I feel cheated by paying for them at all. As you well know I am very disappointed. I will not make further purchases from your company, and I will post my experiences on the Internet so that others will be aware of the hazards of your product. Building inspectors enforce code during the design, construction, and inspection phases. At least they should. If work was done without a permit, obviously they can't. And yes, if code has changed subsequent to the original construction, "non-compliant areas" are grandfathered. Out of code conditions can remain when new and additional work is done, unless the new work is extensive. In that case, the inspection department can require that the old non-compliant areas be brought into compliance, bringing the entire structure "up to code". In general, home inspectors don't enforce or quote code. Some might. In general all they do is tell you which systems in the house function properly, which don't, and what systems may need replacement in the near future. Realize that most home inspectors want to "inspect" just enough to give a warm fuzzy. "HVAC works fine". "Roof may need replacement in the next three to five years." For the most part they don't want to use a fine-tooth comb and be so nit-picky and list so much "non-critical" minutia that kill the transaction. The heat exchanger in the boiler is cracked and leaking carbon monoxide into the ducts? Yes. A cabinet knob that needs tightening? No. If an overzealous home inspector got into the habit of being so negative with minor things that he scared buyers off and repeatedly killed real estate transactions, that inspector would not get any referrals from realtors. So for the most part home inspectors look at the overall condition of the house, and not so much at specific details of the house. And they generally don't quote code. Mongo

I'm not sure if this is what you are talking about but I often deposit my son's checks that come for him when he is away from home. They aren't endorsed by anyone, but they are deposited to his account.

I don't know whether this is an analogous situation, but I routinely deposit checks made out solely in my wife's name without bothering to get her to endorse them. I just write "For Deposit Only" on the back of the check and hand it to the teller with a deposit slip.

So sign "Brenda Brown" and "Charlie Brown" and deposit the check.

Then stop using the C/O on the address. The post office has some form to let letter carriers know who lives at an address (not that most of them care).

If you are going to write "for deposit only" on a check; also add the account number. a bank recently was sued for depositing the check into the wrong account and they didn't have to pay because there was no account number on the check itself, and the deposit slip got separated.

I didn't add the part about the account number because I thought that was a given, but it is good to emphasize that requirement for the reason you stated.
