There's just no getting ahead, or so it seems

As I have posted before, I had hoped to retire in October of this year. I didn't plan very well for retirement and didn't join the retirement plan at work until about 12 years ago and I am only contributing the minimum. So, my retirement income will be around 50% of what I am making now. I had a large dental bill of a little over $3,300 in April, so I dediced to go ahead and work until the end of Dec. Now, my car needs major repairs and my roof needs replacing do to a shoddy job done by a fellow church member who said he had a roofing business. He is long gone from the church and I am left with a leaky roof that also has that dark fungus growing on it so that it is not white anymore. I have been trying to pay off my credit cards and got them down to $172.00 but now will have to put the major car repairs on a credit card and one of my horses has developed a slowly progressing wasting disease that two vets can't figure out. So, my plans for retirement are now on hold. I need and want to retire I am tired of working. I have worked for 46 years without a break but there is always something that happens when I think I might get a head and be able to get the bills paid off. Judith

I don't know if this is a possiblity for you, but more and more people are choosing to work part-time rather than retire. It is an option I will probably persue whether I can afford to stop working or not. It is a very good option for people who have saved enough to meet their basic needs but still need a safety net against big expenses or extra money to keep their standard of living at a level they are used to. With the length of time that people are living now, it just isn't practical for most people to retire at 65 anymore. Even if someone has worked for 46 years like you have, it is pretty hard to save up enough money to support yourself for another 30+ years.

It's going to be hard for you to retire when you obviously don't have any savings you can use for financial "emergencies," such as the dental work or the car repairs. So long as you continue to finance these events -- which do happen to all of us -- using borrowed money, you're never going to get out of the hole. I know it's not what you want to hear, but you need to not only get your CC bills paid off, but you also have to have an emergency cash fund to tap into when the unexpected happens. If you can't manage that, then Bill is right -- you'll need to keep working at least on a part-time basis.

I have bad soil, half your garden size, and it greatly improved for things not effected by juglone, squash, corn, melons, etc. You wouldn't believe the size difference of the year before, so I'll always compost or at least throw leaves all over garden area. All you have to do is dump bags of leaves about a foot or two high over the whole garden area, maybe mow them to speed up decomposition, and you will have given your garden lots of great leaf mold, plus you already have your manure. I think the manure could be new because it can age all year before you throw it down. I wouldn't waste the manure until about a month or 2 before planting, or maybe even half at the end of the year, save the other half at the beginning, but some in the middle of the year too. I've got beds for next year, waiting to put them in, but I'm waiting for the leaves to fall and looking into local pastures for manure. I couldn't give advice on weeds being I'm going to plant some good weeds over the area until the beds are in. Try ragweed, dandelion with the flowers pruned off, yellow dock, and a few other deep rooted types of weeds that bring nutrients to the top of the soil. They will make good compost.

DE should NOT be inhaled! You can eat the darned stuff (and believe me, we ALL eat it) but can't inhale it! Food grade or horticultural grade DE is largely Amorphous silica, which has less of in inhalation danger than the pool filter grade, which is almost all crystalline silica. Your horticultural DE can be used with perfect safety, as long as you wear a dust mask. Are you worried about the warning on the label? Most of that stuff under your kitchen sink has warning labeling, yet we use them with abandon! Have you read the warnings on a bottle of bleach or any household cleaner? EEEEK! Give me DE any day! BTW, contrary to common belief, DE does not lose its effectiveness if it gets wet. It can even be mixed with water and applied as a spray (it doesn't dissolve so frequent agitation will be required).

Redsox - it seems I've come full circle in my rose growing choices. I started out growing roses in Maine, then New Hampshire and then Vermont. So when I began I only grew the once blooming Europeans like Albas and Gallicas along with a few Canadian Explorers and hybrid Rugosas. Then when I moved to a warmer climate I started experimenting with Austins, teas, chinas and noisettes. It's taken me 7 years of experimenting here at my current home but I'm finally refining what I can and can't grow here. Let me preface by saying I don't spray so I have limited myself considerably. When I started out here I tried many teas, tea noisettes and chinas. I gave them three years. Most have been replaced, sad to say, with moderns like hybrid musks, shrub roses, and hybrid rugosas. Of the OGRs I still have are Maggie, SDLM, Marie Pavie and her sister, Marie Daly, Marchessa Boccella (in a pot because I don't like the damask crud she gets here), Great Western, Reine des Violettes, Koenigin von Danemark, and several hybrid rugosas that don't really qualify as OGRs as they hover around the 1900 date of hybridization. After all these years of growing roses, along with getting older, I've just decided that roses must be a part of my landscape, and treated just like all my other landscape plants. Accordingly they must perform up to par to be kept in the garden. This year I'm adding more albas, some more rugosas, more of the hybrid musks I really love, and some species roses. I'm considering ramblers. As I'm running out of "backyard" space I'm expanding out toward our 5 acre field so I won't be able to water and tend like I do near the house. I'm leaning toward a more relaxed garden, I'm now looking at a painting of Alba semi-plena hanging on the wall of my office, that's the effect I want to evoke in my gardens.

Glenda, I do think the folks on the Ozark forum are nice too. Sometimes I pop over there to read and see what's going on, but as you noted there are a lot more ornamental gardeners there and more edible gardeners here so I mostly post here. (And I grow tons of ornamentals too, but there's not as much to talk about with them since they're all well-established and I'm not constantly adding new ones.) The whole edible gardening trend is on a huge upswing and I believe one reason is because folks are beginning to understand that there is a true difference in fresh, homegrown produce and produce that's traveled hundreds or thousands of miles to reach the grocery stores. I are SO GLAD you and other Ozarkers come and join the conversation here as you all enrich our forum so much with your knowledge, experience and photos. Y'all, I don't think I've ever seen a rude remark here either, and even if I did see one, I'd try to assume that the poster was just having a bad day or a bad week because I'd know that's not the usual behavior of that person. I've also noticed everyone here avoids 'hot topics' like global warming or politics or whatever which is just fine with me. (Anyone who wants to discuss those can go to the 'Hot Topics' forum and debate with the folks there all they want.) I know that we often stray off the subject of purely gardening topics and discus other issues like weather, wildlife, birds, farm animals (well, gotta get that manure from someplace), putting up the harvest, sewing, fire danger, etc. but anything like that is still a part of our lives as gardeners here in this region of the country. Another thing I'm really proud of is the way that so many gardeners here share seeds with one another year-round via the U.S. mail and at the 'Spring Fling' seed and plant swap, and for folks who live close enough, even in face-to-fact visits at one another's homes. In the perfect gardening world I envision in my mind, we'd all live in the same town in the same semi-rural neighborhood with plenty of room for our horses and cows, goats and sheep, chickens and guineas, etc., and with tons of space to grow anything/everything we want. We'd run back and forth from one yard to another to "look at this" or "check out that". We'd meet in the summer on someone's patio for a cookout or just a tall glass of iced tea. We'd only have good weather, beautiful ornamentals and edible plants that always produce an abundant crop. However, since we all can't live in that one perfect neighborhood together, we've built our own gardener's virtual neighborhood here and it's almost as good as being together in the same town. Dawn

I hate to say this but now is the time to quit.Get rid of all those things and get a new car.Move into a senior apartment and live a little.They are just things and they will soon be gone.Why have the extra worry. The purpose of buying a home is to cash in on it when you are old.Why let it be a burden to you?If you have children ten times to one they have their own and if you leave it for them they will sell it overnight and it will be gone in a flash.What I'm trying to say "you should enjoy your hard earned work."

Is a reverse mortgage a possibility for you? My parents' best friends did this and it has been a godsend.

This post is a little old, and hope you've gotten things worked out by now. Are you eligible for social security? You can work part time and still draw that.

Maybe you could find someone to repair your roof, not get a total new one. Would this help? Ask around about car repairs. It helps to know good mechanics who won't rip you off. Pay the dentist in payments.

Do you have family members nearby who can help if you need car repairs, etc.?? This helps, too.

Also, have you thought about trying to make money from your home? I believe you said you have horses----perhaps you could board a few extra horses. Would that be a possibility? Or maybe there's other interests you could capitilize on from your home.

Have you consulted a financial planner?

And, my final suggestion-----take you a little vacation! You'll get a whole new perspective. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

Thank you all for your replies. My biggest problem is that I didnt't spend enough time planning for my retirement, actually, I really didn't spend any time planning for it and that was a big mistake. I did get my car repaired two weeks ago and it cost me over $1,800, which I had to put on my credit card that was all paid off. The car runs so much better and one of the things included in that $1,800 was 4 new tires, so now I feel a little safer in it too. I did apply for Social Security benefits last August and my first SS check is due Nov. 12. That will help a lot. I am still working my regular job and will for a while longer. I have good insurance at my job and since I work for a university that has a good medical facility, I can take advantage of that while I am still working. I did talk to a financial planner a little over a year ago. His advice was all based on my selling a piece of property that I own in another state and that is where a lot of the problems originate. The property has turned out to be not as saleable as everyone always thought. The sale of that property, 9 acres, was what I was depending on for my retirement. It is vacant land that has some wetland and due to houses being built on all sides of it and that property being built up, mine is now mostly wetland, but I am still trying to sell it and have taken steps to have some preliminary engineering done on it. I am trying to get things in my much too cluttered house in order. I never married and have no children or close relatives. I am basically alone except for an older sister on the west coast who is worse off than me and an older brother in Michigan who is in poor health and not quite himself anymore. I am trying to take control of my life and my situation. It is not what I had thought it would be, but I have to try to make the best that I can of the situation I find myself in now. Judith

Hoe about taking most of that SS check and putting it into an emergency fund? Try to save enough to cover things like house repairs, dentl work, unexpected vet bills, etc. That way, you wuoldn't have to use your CC for these unexpected expenses and lif would go much more smoothly. I wouldn't even consider retiring until I had done this.
