I fell for a Scam-Learn from my Mistake

Back in February I had a cellphone bill from Verizon I coundn't pay, about $2300. So I just stopped paying it. I got several letters and phone calls from Verizon. One day "someone" allegedly from Verizon called and said they would take a partial payment of $1680 over the phone, close my account and consider me all paid up, no longer delinquent. I gave her my bank account numbers and on March 1 the money came out of my account. The phone calls and letters have completely stopped. Then a few days I went to Annual Credit Report dot com (the only legal free service) and got my credit report. There on the top , listed as a bad debt, is that $2300 from Verizon. It's listed as "past-due-in collections". And my $1680 is gone!!! I was the DUMMY who gave bank information on the phone. Don't fall for this like I did!!!

Yikes! That is a huge phone bill.

Who did you send the check to? Who cashed it? Contact the Attorney general of the state that it was cashed in and see if they can help.

FYI. Whenever you get a phone call (or email) from someone who says they are from a company you do business with, do not give them any information. Instead, tell them you will call them back and then look up the number in your records and make sure they are who they say they are.

Who, other than Verizon, KNEW you owed them $2300? Have you talked to Verizon? Could be the credit report is not up to date.

pippi, I think I've been all over the map on this one. Was too tired last night to try to explain. Now I have decided when I'm up to it, I'll make a simple web page w/link here, start a thread, embed just a few photos, and ask for help and suggestions. No point in asking for help when I'm not in a position to carry through with any of it and using plants that have germinated w/WS'ing. In short, the blue is my garage, that huge taupe structure is my neighbor's garage; it's sunk lower from my property line, and if I start messing there, I'm waiting to see what the new neighbors are going to be like. That's about the only place I can put my raspberries if they germinate, barely a half day of sun though. And they wouldn't look pretty like flowers or shade plants. So I'm not sure what you thought was a shed. The extension to my house there is my computer room. The garage I have a problem with tree roots, water competition, and dripline. There's a nice bleeding heart just to the right of the entry door, and forget-me-nots (not myosotis) self seed readily there. But you know what BH's look like by late July. I had columbines all across, gave one away, the others have petered out. I moved my astilbe because it wasn't happy there and have to haul water because the hose doesn't reach. On the right on my blue garage now there is a trellis with clematis and rose with canes not hardy to my zone, am ripping that out. Hard to keep it weeded there, bit off more than I can chew actually. If it would work, I'd like to plant my delphs, monkshod, couple other possible choices, and/or poppies there out further IF they could handle the dripline. It needs some height at the back. Removing the lilac bush and losing half my apple tree, it gets more than a half a day of sun now. I've planted a lot of flowers in a few places since those photos were taken. My most urgent priority but am dreading it is that I need gutters that work. Paid a guy to do a most of it, screwed it up totally, they don't work, and the downspouts have been checked for clogging, none last check. The way the drainage is now makes it impossible to plant anything around a lot of the house and garage. Rain barrels would be a plus, but more work to keep going. Right now it's 5 gal buckets at one horrible place just at the top of the steps with water pouring out of the gutter when it rains. I have to empty into the sprinkling can to get rid of it or carry it in buckets down to the street and dump it.

Does that really make sense? That this glue can only be used on sheet vinyl but not Peel N Stick (vinyl) tile because it won't dry? Isn't the key word 'VINYL'? Either way you have a solid piece on top of the glue. I would think it would be harder to get it to dry under a huge sheet of vinyl as opposed to tiles. DH didn't use the Roberts stuff but it was vinyl adhesive from Lowe's (I think it was called Henry). I only had like a couple of places that the glue came up on the side a bit and it was when he first started and wasn't sure how much to use. Yes, mineral spirits will take it off! That's what our glue said to use! I just couldn't remember because it's been about 5 years since we did the flooring jobs!

I don’t think the Stages comes with a colander, at least it didn’t when I got it. It does come with a large wood cutting board, large white tray/cutting board, small tray/cutting board, 6 ceramic prep bowls, bottom sink grid, and under counter rack. The prep bowls are well designed to both stack and be reversible, although I mostly use them with the larger size up. I like the square design because it’s easy to use a wood spatula to scrape out the contents. The bottom grid hasn’t been a problem for me. You do have to lift it up or take it out to clean the sink, but that outweighs the advantages of being able to set things on it to drain and the fact that it protects the bottom of the sink from scratches. I do wish it was in two pieces so it would more easily fit in my dishwasher. It is so big that I have angle it to get it in and it’s hard to load other items around it.

You should check with Verizon, but this seems pretty "normal" as far a debt collection goes. Most big companies have debt collection divisions - often set up as a separate company owned by the larger parent company. The "two" companies usually don't communicate well.

My guess would be that the person who called you really was working for verizon since the call came so quickly. If it was a true 3rd party collection agency, it usually takes 60-90 days instead of the short period you described. You need to get back in contact with verizon.

Unfortunately, your money probably went to a bunch of junk fees that they tacked on to your account once you stopped paying. Unless you have it in writing that your payment was for settlement of the account, they can apply the money to fees, interest etc and your balance may not actually decrease.

There is an outside chance that they weren't trying to take advantage of you and just never updated their reporting on you. You should be able to tell pretty quickly when you call them.

And, as always, ***get it in writing*** both the offer and the confirmation that the debt is settled.

Trust is a strange thing. When I meet a new person I trust them even if I have heard the person can't be trusted. I make my own judgements about the person. BUT, when it comes to money, I don't trust anyone with my money, no one. I don't even give my house key to a family member. I heard a criminal on TV say anyone can be conned, well, he hadn't met me. LOL

Guess what happened-I called Verizon today and they did indeed accept my "settlement" back in March. They are going to send me a letter as proof. So kind. It just didn't get to the credit bureaus yet. So I will be able to get this "blot" off my credit report. They say it's good to check once a year and you can (by US law) get a free copy once a year. The internet address is Annualcreditreport dot com. sorry I don't know how to post a link.

Sorry Jannie but in a "settlement" you only paid part of your bill. This debt ("blot") will be on your credit report for at least 7 years.

Not necessarily true. It is completely up to the company how they report it. That is why you need to get it in writing that they will report the debt as paid.
