investing options for ira and roth ?

Retirement is 20 years away. I have no pension but I do have about $5000 in an IRA money market acct and another $5000 in a Roth money market acct. I've always been interested in financial stuff (taxes, bookkeeping, budgeting, financing, etc) just not really in the investing area. But I realize now that I need to learn about investing my money and planning for retirement.

So off to my local bank I go to see about investing my $10,000 in hopes of bigger earnings. They suggest I purchase mutual funds (Class A). Not happy with this option as it's a 5.25% fee upfront plus $25/year/account. It seems to me a huge amount of money to pay in fees!

So now I'm considering an index fund and I'm looking at Vanguard's:

~ Total Stock Market Index Fund

~ 500 Index Fund

~ Large Cap Index Fund

So any thoughts on Index funds? Vanguard?

I'm interested in hearing:

~ How you would invest the $10,000 (mutal fund, index fund, etc)

~ and WHY you choose this option (great earnings? low fees?)
