Student Loan Consolidation

Posted by skinnytail (My Page) on

I consolidated my student loans with Sallie Mae long ago. Soon after my husband did the same. Needless to say, we have been unable to benefit from the newer consolidation plans with extremely low interest rates because our loans are already consolidated with Sallie Mae. My question is this: is it possible for my husband and me to consolidate our loans together in order to take advantage of one of these low interest rate consolidations? I know there are inherent risks involved in consolidating student loans with a spouse (ie if one of us were to die then the survivor would be responsible for paying off the deceased spouse's loan amount); however, these risks are well worth it if we are able to pay less with a low interest consolidation. Please tell me what you know!

RE: Student Loan Consolidation

I would go to graduateleverage.com and see what they say. I don't know if you are aware that our illustrious Congress has allowed student loan rates to rise to almost 7%. You may already have a lower rate. There are calculators and assessment tools on their website to help you decide if you already have a better loan package. Good luck. I'll be in the same boat next year, only my loans will be almost $90k!
