How long must you keep records

We just moved and how long do we keep records on both the house we sold and the rental we had but sold several years ago. What other records must be kept, and how long?
We lived there for over 20 years.

RE: How long must you keep records

oh, Momma Bird! Don't you have a link for a list of this stuff?

Well, once you don't own it anymore, there's probably not a real reason to keep it.

You might keep the pay-off notification or letter. Anything that would help prove you DIDN'T own it, that the mortgage holder and tax man don't have a claim on you.

Beyond that, I'd think there's no reason to keep anything unless it's sentimental, or unless you liked that particular plumber and might want to hang onto his phone number, or something like that.
