saving pay check stubs

Everything is online where I work at. We get out paystubs off of a website. I print mine out to keep. I have a coworker who does not and tells me there is no reason to do so. Should I be keeping all this? She tells me that you get a copy of the numbers at the end of the year for taxes. Yes, but they are not as detailed. Should I keep?

YES, keep copies of them.

I had a situation several years ago in which the bookkeeping/accounting person had no freaking clue what she was doing and wasn't depositing payroll taxes. When the situation was discovered and the girlie fired, her replacement had to research all the records. When all was said and done and a new system in place, it ended up that my records were still not correct, several weeks of payroll taxes were missing from the totals. I had all the original check stubs to cross-reference and get the numbers corrected.

By the way, I believe it is illegal (on either the state or federal level) for employers to NOT provide a detailed paycheck stub in some form. I'm assuming your company has an intranet that all employees can access from work and/or home to get the information. Otherwise, they would probably have to provide a printed checkstub.

Thanks for your response. Yes they provide them to everyone. In this case the gal next to me is telling me no reason to keep. I will go ahead and keep mine just in case.

And even if it's not on sale, you can always ask, especially if it's a floor model. A friend of mine bought a tool box at HD, and it was the last one- a floor model. He asked for and got 15% off.

Interesting enough, all the anti-neighbor folks assume there must be some city ordinance to prevent offended neighbors from trimming limbs hanging over their property. There seldom is and the police have other matters with which to deal. The police don't handle that. At least not in towns in this area (my own, family's or where rental property is located). It's the Town Code Enforcer who handles it. That's what they get paid to do. My mother's town has strict tree codes (well, they're ultra strict about everything.) If a property owner's tree is overhanging a fence or property line, it can be trimmed back by neighbor providing it is: in danger of touching a building or wires, impeding growth of neighbor's own landscaping, or has potential to do some kind of structural damage on neighbor's premises (fence, buildings, etc.) However, neighbor cannot trim tree in such a way that it will bring on disease, poor growth habit or death. If in doubt, contact the code enforcer for an inspection. I'd suggest you look into that angle, chinchette. If you walk into your town hall, you should freely be given a copy of the code/ordinance that addresses your situation.

I would pay him in cash, and profusely thank him for his professional opinions. We are getting some work done in a community of about 25,000 people. I found out that the contractors are talking with each other all the time. THEY know what potential customers are doing. If you treat #2 fairly, the word will get around. If you ever have to go back to him or his contractor, or his friends you will stand a much better chance of a good response. Conversely, if the contractor community thinks you screwed the guy over, good luck on getting their best work out of ANY of them in the future! That's part of YOUR cost of doing business. I would pay him $150, and tell him "thank you!"

Update. I visited both the Apple Store (to hold iPhones) and the AT&T store to discuss upfront costs and plans. The jury's still out on whether to get a 6s or 6s Plus. I was annoyed at first when I had to sign up and wait to be seen by someone in the AT&T store. I almost left in a polite huff and decided that would be foolish, so I hunkered down and waited. I'm glad I did because a very very knowledgeable young woman answered all my questions. She actually gave me way more info than I needed, but here's the deal: In my case, lascatx is wrong about them charging me monthly for the balance of the phone and not stopping until I bring it to their attention. In the past, I have opted for 2-year contracts at a lower, subsidized price. All I paid monthly was for my plan, i.e., voice, data, text. That was/is one of the benefits of locking into a contract. The salesperson told me that AT&T is one of the few carriers still doing this and soon, within a year, they will cease altogether. The option is still available to me to do this, but it would be the last time. My $70/mo total bill, which includes an unlimited data plan, is still mine to keep. I can buy the phone at the lesser amount and agree to a 2-year contract, or I can buy the phone for the full price. I'm not interested in paying over time and having it added to my monthly bill. If I decided to break my contract at any point, I will have to pony up the balance. So, really no risk at all for me to do the contract, as it's a savings of $450. She mentioned $40 here or there if I do one or the other, but at that point, I had reached my saturation point and I'm not gonna fuss over that amount. I hope this has been helpful. I have an existing plan I'd like to keep; I seem to do well with phones for two years; paying less is also nice.

Another reason for keeping them is that they'd better add up at year-end to the amount that the employer claims to have paid you when you receive your "Employment Income" report for your tax return.

I would keep them for at least a year until the year-end statement comes out.

Hi again,

When checking at year end to see whether employment payments equals amount claimed to have been paid for income tax reporting, check deductible, charitable amounts that may be involved, as well, of course.

If you get laid off, you might want to have at least a few stubs to prove the salary that you made at the position. Sometimes the companies you are interviewing want to verify your previous income. Just to make sure they aren't going to pay you too much. (Fat chance of that these days anyway!) And yes, this is legal for them to do.
I got laid off January 2002 and am still holding to my last stub as I have yet to find another full time position.

One other reason to keep your records is to verify that your social security was properly credited. You can check this yearly with social security. It is important.
