National Do Not Call List Registry

I signed up for this years ago, and it has been wonderful not being plagued by so many calls.

I saw the site mentioned in another thread, and thought it worthwhile for the site to have a thread and clickable link of its own.

I noticed too that you can file complaints at the same site, if you get calls from offenders and have been on the Do Not Call list for 31 days.

*Reminder: Even if your number is registered, companies with which you do business may continue to call you. So may charities, political organizations, and telephone surveyors.

You can register at the site, or check your registration, or the registration of others.

Indeed. And that is why there are so many telemarketers pretending to do surveys these days.

For sure. When they start out by saying "I am not trying to sell you anything" they are.
I still get tons of calls from charities and companies I do business with.
I can't wait for the elections so I can listen to all of those 'vote for ....' messages!

If you have a smartphone there are apps that can send such calls directly to voicemail (or in some cases, just send a busy signal). In either case, your phone doesn't ring. Of course, registering your phone with the national "Do Not Call" registry will help as well. Remember that the registry doesn't block everything: Because of limitations in the jurisdiction of the FTC and FCC, calls from or on behalf of political organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors would still be permitted, as would calls from companies with which you have an existing business relationship, or those to whom you've provided express agreement in writing to receive their calls. However, if you ask a company with which you have an existing business relationship to place your number on its own do-not-call list, it must honor your request. You should keep a record of the date you make the request.

I don't have a phone number, just go to the donotcall.gov and register your cell numbers. This is a true story -- look at this website, they are the people who started it: intelius.com They have your cell number if you use it for any business, etc.

I like registries. Seems like the only weddings I go to are the children of friends, or friends of my son. I don't know what their personal style is anymore. And usually you know only one half of the happy couple. lol As a matter of fact, the last wedding we went to was in November. My best friend from high school, and her hubby who is my husband's employer, it was their son. I don't know Matt anymore, and the registry was great. I went to Target and bought a LOT of kitchen gadgets that they had listed. It was a ball! And I wrapped the gift in three boxes using tan contracter's paper, with brown, gold and green ribbons and bows. Each box was smaller than the next, and I built a tower. I LOVE gift wrapping. It's the ONLY time that a bride (and Matt, lol) THANKED ME at the wedding reception for the cool wrapping! I was introduced to the bride and she was so excited that I took the time to wrap the gift in their wedding colors! LOL (got the colors from the invitation) A honeymoon registry, well sounds odd, I've never heard of one. Very intersting. I would rather send money. I was thinking that this was done through a travel agency. But I checked the link and I guess I was wrong! I know that these companies need $$$ to keep going, but I don't want 10% or more of my gift going to someone else. I just as soon give cash to the couple. Jannie, I love ya', I do, but I think it is kind of sad that it took you 32 years to get over someone wearing a specific color to your wedding. I have no problem with anyone wearing any color they want to, to celebrate with me. I wore black and white to Matt's wedding, and his Mom was wearing a gorgeous black velvet formal dress.

Keep in mind that by calling an 800 number, you are establishing a relationship, therefore an exemption. Ever see those For sale signs on houses with a number to call for info? Call it and you'll have realtors calling you within minutes. Again, you gave them unwitting permission. The DNC list is good but not perfect. Not all telemarketers respect it and those that don't won't have CID either. In my state it's illegal to use a recorded call without a person first introducing themself to get permission. Yet it's not enforced so it goes on. Vengeance is your best bet and have fun with them. Get an airhorn and blast them in the ear. Lead them on and waste their time. It'll be more fun and be as effective as reporting them. Ask them what color underwear they have on, if you can get the aluminum siding in paisley, if they'll sing the price list to you and keep putting them on hold. Take them to the bathroom with you after a chilifest and give vivid narration. Splash some water and muffle your voice and yell the phone fell in the toilet... can u hear me now???? Remember: No fear, no retreat, no surrender (to quote my wedding vows). Telemarketers are scum of the earth, the lowliest type of scum. The type that make gas station bathroom floors look clean. and Never, never, never buy from those scum! Don't even give them the time of day and maybe someday they will fade away...

I get very few calls from charities. If I do get one, I tell that that I never donate money over the phone, and/or I give locally.

Maybe word has gotten around to not waste their time calling me, as I just am not gonna donate that way.

I'm on the Do Not Call List and recently renewed - you need to do that every 5 years. It's been 5 years since it started, so if you got your name on the list then, you may need to renew. If you have cell phone numbers that you didn't place on the list originally, you can also add them to the list. Although you're not supposed to be able to get these calls on cell phones, it's done all the time. Check the link below for more information.

When I get a call from a charity or organization (exempt from the Do Not Call List), I just request they remove my name AND number from their calling list. I believe, by law, they must do so or chance a penalty. Before the Do Not Call List, I used to keep a small notebook by the phone and would take the persons name making the call, the name and number of the organization, put down the date they called and that I had requested they take my name/number off the calling list. Years ago, you could get a financial reward if they didn't remove your name when requested, and called you again.
