moving on

i was here the other day, read the postings of someone losing their job and being downsized.

this happened to me last year. i was laid off form a job i really liked from a company that i really liked. after 7 years i had planned on being there for another 10 years and going on to retire. didn't work out that way.

so now what?

it took me a while to climb out of depression as well as a double-up of my meds when my company sent me a notice after 4 months that the lay off was permament. by christmas i was beginning to see things in a better light. but boy what an ugly year.

financially we are ok with my wife working and a small infusion of cash from our emergency funds. i've been working out of my house at small jobs-- but am not sure this is really right fit for me.

what i want to do is work part time doing clerical work--

accounts payable/receivable and/or some bookkeepping work.

what i don't have are current skills in those areas that show. i can do the work/just am not familiar with the computer programs they use now-a-days. I learned to accounting with a pencil and paper.

so how do i get to where i want to be?

community college. IF your unemployment benefits haven't run out, you may be able to attend for free.

I was thinking community college, as well.

Do you know someone doing that type of work now?

Someone with whom you might be able to arrange for some instruction, some tutoring, in the general ways in which that work is being done now, along with the more practical aspects of the situation?

Do you have connections with some agencies - community, sport, educational, church groups where you could put the word out that you would like such help?

If you look through your various connections in the web of life in which you move, you may be ableto find someone skilled in the area of your need who'd be happy to coach you.

For example, I had a couple of auto accidents recently, one of them for which I was charged (as it appeared that I had run a red light). A few months later I received a letter from the Ministry of Transportation inviting me, being over 70 and having had a chargeable accident, to take a vision, knowledge and driving test (if I wished to continue holding a driving licence).

Several people in the two churches that I attend knew of my situation.

I took the vision test (could pass for general licence, not the straight truck that I've held, but I have cataracts which are to be operated on when space available, so I can retread it if I can pass the vision test within a year).

Someone in one church said that one of the active members is a driving instructor, so they introduced me and my need to that gentleman, who said he'd be happy to drive me around the course and critique my driving.

I took the knowledge test, had three answers incorrect (possibly 4 allowed).

I expected to take the driving test after a period, as the usual waiting period in unpopular winter is about two weeks, so I'd make a trip with the driving instructor in the meantime.

But the drivers' test office gave me an opportunity to take the test on the following day (possibly related to a storm being forecast?) ... before my tutor and I had opportunity to make the critiquing run.

I failed the test on the next day.

So I have a reservation to try again in a couple of weeks, and in the meantime have the type of licence that newly minted licencees hold - must have 4-year licensed driver sitting beside me, no driving midnight - 5 a.m., no freeway driving.

Looks like the disease called "second childhood" is taking hold!

Not so easy, when you live in the country ... I have a friend a few miles away who went on an errand with me the other day, but I had to drive "naked" to his place.

However - the point here, with regard to your situation, is that I found someone skilled in the area of my need in a church with which I am related.

If you investigate through the various entities where you have a connection, you might find help for your need.

Good wishes for being able to achieve some of your goals as easily and simply (and cheaply) as possible.

JJ and Lily, I move roses around like they were furniture in a living room. Here is my best experiences. First, when possible, I move them as soon as the dirt is thawed enough to be dug in the spring when they are dormant. Dig the destination holes first. Next, dig a large area around the roots to take as much root with you as possible AND, take as much dirt as possible. I use 2 shovels and place the rose between them before I lift them out. Sort of like a shovel/rose sandwich. Then I place them in their new hole and add water and fill in with dirt. Most often they don’t even know they have been moved. To do it later in the season is tricky. I did it last year. I used old sheets on copper pipe trellises in front of the roses and made sure I watered twice a day. It was 90-100 degrees. I moved 4 of them,and 3 of them were little. The 3 little ones did great. The jury is still out on the larger rose. It’s canes stayed green, but it didn’t grow leaves afterwards, so I’ll find out if it’s alive this spring. Believe it or not, I am going to be moving 3 of those 4 roses again this spring... it’s just the way I do. :) If you like the location, JJ, I would give them another year. Use a good fertilizer (I use Osmocote 1/4 cup per plant early in the spring) and water them well during the season. See if that doesn’t make a difference. Rebecca

I might be wrong about this, but I think the goal with overwintering potted hostas is to keep them out of the sun. So I would put the pots in a shaded location. Colder and darker is better I think. Plastic pots that won't break. I had several on the screened porch last year (NNE facing). That kept them dry, and they were shaded. And I've overwintered in the unheated garage. I'll have pots in both locations this year because I just didn't get around to planting them in the summer. C'est la vie - I'm only human. But wet newspaper and plastic bags would be great if you're indeed going to have them out of the ground short-term - like if you can dig them up, transport them to the new home, and stick 'em in the ground fairly quickly. (Or - if you want to throw them on the driveway for a while!)

@Jan Moyer we are hiring a professional contractor. I sent the plans to him yesterday. waiting on his estimate. i have spent a lot of time on it. during my initial consultation with him he didn’t think to turn the tub. He did however say that a 34 inch wide shower was fine since it’s 54 deep. i actually don’t want the chandelier direcyltky over the tub. I’m thinking id like it centered in the section of the “room” with the tub. my husband wants to keep the tub parallel to the window and says 34 inches will be fine in the shower. so yes i got more gray hair over this for nothing. cest la vie! we kept the wood louvered doors original to the house so thats why I’m putting the mirrors on the wall. i am toting with the idea of having them trimmed up on the walls likr this the original 70s bathroom had giant unframed mirrors surrounding the tub like walls. I still have all those mirrors. i know this type Of trim work will be expensive. I‘d like to get an estimate on it though. i just moved the closet door away from tub. That was still the original/existing location.. back to the hall. I’m not sure why my blue & yellow lines pic didn’t post. Trying again one yellow line is the wall I’m talking about. The other yellow line is the distance/walking space I’m talking about. The blue line is where the wall exists now. I know 56” is enough in the bathroom and that 40 or more is enough in the hall. I have to move the wall no matter what though so i‘m trying to figure out the best place to move it to. The hall is 20 feet long. and is currently 40 inches wide then widens to 64” wide after you pass the kids bath. as it is on the plans, the hall is 48” inches after the kids bath, and the space between the vanity counter and the wall with shower and water closet is 56”. The contractor thought i should give the other 8” inches to the bathroom and make the hall 40 inches. Then he went and looked at the hall and said well it is a long hall so i can see why you like some extra width here.

big city location.. zone is simply minimum winter temp ... so it doesnt tell us much in your area the rest of the year ... z6 is rather diverse ... as far as them living.. you can do it any time..the only downside might be how ugly they look the rest of the year.. if you hack them up .. moving a whole clump .. water it well for a week.. then just move it.. and drown it again ... and probably will look just fine the rest of the year .. hmmm.. that reminds me.. there was a brilliant post on this topic.. wonder if i can find it.. lol .. if you are cutting it up ... it depends how far you go with that process ... if in half.. or even quarters.. on a lagre plant ... probably take it well ... if you are going down to small pieces.. then your goal is nice clumps next year.. and you shouldnt really care about what they look like the rest of this year .... just do it .. if need be .. or wait.. really .. its your choice ken note the tape trick ... it really helps https://www.houzz.com/discussions/2000608/moving-a-large-fully-leafed-out-hosta-lots-o-pix

On re-reading your OP, I am wondering about something (being a curious cuss).

You speak of keeping accounts with pencil and paper.

I thought that accountants kept their records in earlier years using pen and ink ...

... making it more difficult to make [boss-required?] "amendments" later.

Don't tell me that I've been wrong, all these years!

Seems to me that a major company that did some of that
"creative accounting" saw their share price drop from about $120.00 per share ...

... to about 69 cents ... over the period of a few years.

And I hope that, if you had some of those shares, you sold them earlier ... resulting, of course, in sticking someone(s) else with the loss?

Oh, right - they were working with computers.

Making it a whole lot easier to make amendments (if the earlier documents hadn't been filed with outside agencies).

Good wishes for being able to move forward with achieving the goals that you've been working on.

Are there any temporary staffing agencies (AccountTemps, Kelly Girls, Manpower, etc.) near you? Most of them will let you train on current software for free, some in their office, some from your home. You might find you can acquire the computer skills in 3 to 6 weeks that way.
