Cd's + POD

Question about CD's that are POD. Can Cd's designated as POD be distributed immediately after death, is there a waiting period? CD's were purchased @ 10 years ago. Are Cd's cashed in and paid out or distributed to recipient?

There will always be a waiting period on anything that is POD as you must provide a Death Certificate before the change can happen. The rest depends on state law but generally are distributed to the recipient. Of course it that person is under age or in legal trouble they may not be eligible to receive in their own name.

My mother had a number of CDs that had POD on them. We were able to cash them in within a very short period of time. You had to have the death certificate, but the money was available within a week or 10 days after the death, if I recall correctly. The POD certificates are NOT considered part of the estate, so don't go through probate.

If you're the executor, you'll just give each recipient their CD and a copy of the death certificate. Then each will go to the bank, and will be able--after supplying appropriate ID and signing the necessary tax documents--to cash the certificates themselves. As my mother's executrix, I did go to the bank with each of my siblings, just to make sure everything went smoothely for them (it was the same bank I used, where I knew everyone), but my presence really wasn't necessary.

I'm sorry for your loss--I know at this time, you end up having a lot of questions, and wondering where to get answers. I think with the CD's, I went to the bank, first, and asked all the questions, so I knew what to tell my siblings--but honestly, a lot of that time is a bit of a blur to me. Just to close out this thread - here is what I have decided to do. I did all of the research on Russounds whole house digital systems. ABUS (the low end) will not meet my needs. It has too low of a power output to provide what I want. The higher end systems look great, but the price is too high for me right now. So - I have decided to run 1/2 inch conduits to all of my volume controllers so I can upgrade in the future. I will start off by ditributing line level audio to each controller. I found that the cost of staying analog was still hard to beat. I can get a 6 zone amp with 40 watts per channel for under $300. The volume controllers are $30 each. So my cost per room us under $200 with very nice in ceiling speakers. Bob

About 10 years ago I helped out a friend who needed surgery and owned a woman's clothing boutique...I was amazed by the ease at which the wrinkles came out of new clothing being unboxed and hung up in her store, and bought a professional steamer for my own use. When I moved not long after, the ironing board did not move with me. Any item that needs touching up gets done as I need it. It takes seconds. The steam in the winter is helpful in the air, in the summer I find it is not a problem; I seem to need it less often and only for a brief amount of time when I do. I was thinking recently that I should get rid of my iron, as I have not used it in 10 years!! I should say that I 'snap' garments as I take them out of the dryer as soon as it's done, and take just a few extra minutes to fold each piece, then (usually!) hang them in the closet right away. (I NEVER ever have a basket of jumbled up clothing - if it has to hang around, at least everything is smoothed and folded). Some clothes out of the washer go into the dryer for only a minute to remove wrinkles and then get hung up; others get hung up without any drying. This helps keep them smooth and nearly wrinkle free as does attention to not over-drying as was pointed out. I have an incredibly small closet which forces me to be more selective. I used to have a huge problem managing my clothing - for years I had WAY too many items, and would get overwhelmed by their care. Realizing I seldom wore most of what I owned, I've SIMPLIFIED and find managing much easier now. Also, not having piles of clothing waiting to be ironed helps! I will never go back to ironing, but agree that for those that do - ironing (or steaming) as you go eliminates that process.... Penny G.

I don't have an IPod, so no help there. As for making sure you don't buy duplicate CD's, my solution is not so much maintaining & carrying around an inventory of what I already have...but carrying a wishlist of what I want, or "need" if you work on building collections. If it made my wishlist, I know I don't already own it. If it made my wishlist, I know I've thought about it and want it more than any impulse buy and it serves a purpose for my music tastes and collection. If I see a CD in a store that's not on my wishlist & could be an impulse buy...I DON'T buy it!!!! I write it down on my wishlist for the next planned trip...or to verify, or to think about it or research it in the event I discover I really don't need or want it in the next few days. I've had to discipline myself to do this, but it absolutely works for me in stopping wasted money on impulse buys. If the CD is released, remember that IT WILL BE THERE THE NEXT TIME, and if it's not, there are so many other ways to buy the CD online or in other stores. You're not missing any opportunities if you walk away from impulse CD purchases.

I wrote the name of ours incorrectly - it is Niles, not Niels. The receiver was about $900. The speakers can be as inexpensive as a couple of hundred dollars a pair and can go through the roof. We have a single speaker in my new laundry room which was about $200. In the kitchen we have 2 pairs of speakers which were a fancier kind and were about $400 a pair. The iPod hooks into the receiver. You can control it through a remote at the receiver, or you can put in keypads in the wall to control it from the room you're in. Our receiver is in the laundry room in a high up cabinet, so we have one of the keypads on the wall in the kitchen. The keypads are pricey at $250 each. You need to do the wiring when the electrical is going in - they'll run wires from your receiver location to your speaker (and keypad if you use them) locations. Even if you don't want to pay for all of the rest of the equipment while you're doing the remodel, it would be worthwhile to run the wiring while the ceiling is open as it is way harder & more expensive to do it later. You can also hook up a CD player to these units and play CDs. Danielle, was your question about wall color directed at me? My color is SW Jogging Path. Just to clarify - although POD accounts are not part of the probate process, they ARE counted as part of the estate, for estate tax purposes. Under no circumstances should the executrix/trustee 'not count' POD accounts; that would be a breach of fiduciary duty. A final tax return for the estate must be filed within 18 months of the deceased's DOD.
