Spend less than you earn.

Invest the difference ... shrewdly.

Pay an advisor if you wish.

But learning how to do it yourself will likely pay you well.

BINGO.

I posted about the best lessons we've been taught.

But spending LESS THAN YOU EARN has figured prominently in our own personal "strategy" over the years. (We've "ear-marked" the money we DIDN'T spend for INVESTMENT, you guys).

The prevailing opinion is that you have earn MORE money to get ahead. I think that's baloney. You need to set a thoughtful, realistic WEEKLY budget and you have to STICK TO IT!

Monthly budgets are bull-hit. Most people are too financially inept and too UNDISCIPLINED to deal with the reality of a 4 WEEK ACCOUNTABILITY. lol. Personally, I'm appalled at the financial ineptitude of people, (and I couldn't care less if their stupidity sends them down the sewer) but IF too many of them go down the sewer there's big trouble waiting for the rest of us.

I'm pushin' 50 and many of my friends have, over the years, "busted my ass" about living with "room-mates", eschewing expensive "conveniences" (cable TV, cell phones, etc.). Truly, such things are CHOICES. If those choices don't "work" for you (fit into your budget), don't make them! THIS household wouldn't care less... so it makes no sense for us to pay for them! (we read when there's nothing on the "free" TV channels).

My husband just quit smoking for the last and final time 5 days ago (he was diagnosed with the beginnings of emphysema at age 35 this past week).

We both sat down today and figured on a calculator how much in the last 15 years we would of had had it not gone up in smoke - between $9000 to $10,000 and he was a frugal smoker (no name brands, generic only and roll your own if you have to).

Just think what we could have done had we invested that money - the habit over the years worked out to be about a $50 - 75 per month. It would have been worth a whole heck of alot more then 10,000.

Maybe enough to of remodeled our whole house or paid a quarter of our mortgage off.

Moral of the story is that small lifestyle changes can really add up.

Unfortunately, the lack of a comprehensive universal healthcare plan in the US makes early retirement for many people impractical. As stats from AARP are finding, a growing percentage of retirees are finding their healthcare costs, even under Medicare, are chewing up an average of 34% of their income. And early retirees don't get Medicare. You get it at 65, or unless you're disabled (you cannot do at least 3 of the standard Assisted Daily Living criteria). The reality is, people are extremely spoilt by employers picking up the majority of healthcare premiums. I used to pull medical insurance premiums for clients. If I could find a basic HMO policy for a healthy 45 yr old at less than $700/mo, I thought I was doing really well! If you weren't healthy, or in your late 50's, expect a premium more in the vicinity of $1000/mo. That comes along with all kinds of deductibles and "don't pay that, sorry" exclusions, BTW. Expect another $50-200/mo costs for those extras. Standard cap on benefits is $1M - anything over that, let's say, a serious degenerative disease, forget it, insurance money cuts off at that point. Also doesn't include dental or vision. Or long term care insurance. I'm not saying it can't be done. But many, many people grossly underestimate how much health insurance of ALL types, actually costs in the real-life marketplace. Insurance underwriting is very democratic. It doesn't care if you've saved $15M for retirement or $15K. Medical improvements can keep you alive a lot longer these days, even with serious diseases. Insurance companies know this, which is why life insurance costs are dropping like a rock, while all medical insurance premiums are rising like hot air balloons in a high wind. Big costs lie ahead for Boomers as they age, and that skew to the actuarial tables means the Gen X & Y'ers won't get a lot of slack cut on their premiums. The first time you have something wrong with you, they know you're an expensive risk forever afterwards. So you'll pay for it, one way or another.

However, all CFPs have broker licenses. And there is nothing wrong with affiliating oneself with a brokerage, any more than you need be nervous about taking your car to a factory-authorized dealership rather than an independent garage. There are good and bad in both sectors. You need to remember there is a substantial legal difference between "investment advising" and "financial (estate) planning." It sounds like many of you folks posting have used "investment advisors". They have NO fiduciary responsibility to you. None. Nada. Zip. They are NOT legally obligated to put your personal interests FIRST. I cannot emphasize this enough. It is a critical, crucial, legal difference. A CFP must, by law, put your personal interests first. And yes, there is little profit for them in doing so unless you have a portfolio of assets to manage. Do you grudge them a living, any more than your doctor or carpenter or mechanic or gardener? When I worked at the independent CFP's office, there were many people who came for their first introductory no-cost meeting. Most of them were not suitable clients, for varying reasons. It might be something as simple as a personality clash (such as the couple who came in and spent two hours contradicting one another with every answer), or as basic as a differing risk assessment (clients who wanted options, offshore leases, or anything risky were politely declined). But surprisingly often, it was because people couldn't adequately define their goals, yet thought they could still somehow afford everything they wanted without saving sufficiently for it. They got offended when they were told they couldn't retire early, travel around the world, fund four children for college and graduate school, and pay off their mortgage in five years, on their current debt-to-assets ratio. Now, I am certainly not saying anybody involved with this current discussion is like that. What I am trying to explain is that any advisor, whether a CFP or not, cannot make you something out of nothing. What a CFP can do is help you define your goals, and determine if they are achievable. This involves MORE than diversifying your portfolio. A lot goes into your complete financial picture, and everyone's situation is a little bit different, because their goals and risk-taking factors are individual. Life being as changeable as it is, it can be handy to have someone there with the professional knowledge to help you and your family analyze and cope with changes to your financial/legal situation as the years progress. Many couples have differing views about money and any good CFP will tell you they spend a lot of time "counseling" couples so that everybody stays "on the same page" together. You don't have to have a CFP, and many of us can't afford one. But for those who can afford it, a CFP can be an invaluable resource. And I say that, even though I handle all the investments in our family and have done a very good job of it. There is a world of difference between an amateur and a professional - this is even more true of finance and investing than it is of most areas.

Hi Ole Joyful! I would love to get a copy of this book, or any help offered. I am in my mid 30s, husband late 40s. Hubby has been 100% disabled for years, therefore, I am the worker. We have a nice house, child, dogs, cars, and want to secure it all for the future. In my job field, there is no 401K, or anything offered, unless you work for a corporation. So, I have a money market savings acct that I add money every so often. I also have a policy, should anything happen to me. This way, I know the house will be paid for, plus extra cost of living. I would LOVE to spend one weekend with retired people who have made it, but only with the same conditions as I am in. I need to know if I'm doing everything right, to protect our future. I think we all need a mentor in our life.

"The simple, unwashed advice is to rebalance your equity OUT of your real estate... probably to at least 70-80% of the total value, and move the funds to safety reserves growing in a principal-protected/insured manner." Sounds good, until market tanked, and you had already "rebalanced" your equity OUT of your real estate at market high. Now you have to move, but the current real estate value is only a portion of the value during market high, even with the balance in "your mortgage freedom account" you could not repay the mortgage that you had refinanced. What would you do? I remember the one person who provided the advice was banned from Gardenweb. I wonder how many people took his advice and later lost their homes. At your age, the smartest thing to do with your money is to increase your earning potential by getting more education, training and experience at your chosen career.

Rather than double jeopardy, that looks like a double bonus, to me.

Plus, if you live in northern climes in winter where rules that forbid smoking inside of buildings apply, avoiding the teeth-chattering experience of standing outside for several minutes to smoke a few times daily.

Plus, if you value your kids' best health opportunities, doing the same when you go home.

And in the car en route.

Not my idea of fun. Apart from the stinginess.

Plus, gonativegal, there'd have been even greater value, while you were paying off the mortgage earlier, had you started a hobby of learning at least some things about how money works.

While using part of the saving to pay down the mortgage earlier, you might have chosen to use part of that savings to build an emergency fund, for it sure feels good if you have a major financial emergency, e.g. mechanical failure on your car, to be able to pay for the repairs with cash rather than using high-interest credit cards to cover the bill (and maybe a rental to get to work while yours is being fixed).

After you'd made the last mortgage payment, that would have meant that you could have continued to save and invest in ways that would make the asset work better: getting a better rate of growth, getting tax advantages, including deferrals and lower rates of tax.

I offer my thanks to your husband for his wise choice to quit smoking. I hope that when cravings come, he can keep strongly in mind the many advantages that go along with keeping that quit intact.

He can quite likely find some wise advice, support and empathy on the forums at www.quitnet.org, should he choose.

If he'dlike to come here, or on the Kitchen Table forum here, where there are many participants and some really good friendships, plus support in times of trouble, he'll be welcome.

Greetings again, folks.

I wonder how gonativegal's husband's resolution to quit smoking is going?

Emphysema is a bad news game - especially when one is a smoker.

I've written them hoping that his quit is intact.

And hoping that, if it is not, that he will soon quit again.

Perhaps some of you would like to do so, as well - sometimes it helps to know that one has a number of people hoping for success in quitting that addiction ... especially when one is coping with emphysema.

Good wishes to all of you for increased financial freedom.
