Just had this happen today, so forgive me while I vent.

My brother and I, executors of my mothers estate, had an insurance form that needed notarizing. No problem, banks have notaries, right? So I have my brother meet me over our lunch hour at my bank, Chase Bank. We sit down with the customer service rep and explain the situation, and she explains that as I am their customer, she can notarize my signature, but not my brother's! Wait a minute, I've been banking with you for over 40 years and you're telling me that you're going to notarize my signature, but not my brother's? That's right. And that's what she proceeded to do.

She might as well have looked me straight in the eye and said she didn't care dog squat about my business!

Chase Bank just lost a customer. National City Bank here I come!

As far as I know, a notary public would either have to know you (as a customer) or be shown a government-issued picture ID (drivers license or passport) and they can chage a nominal fee, such as $1 or $2 . If they refuse to help you, go to another bank or insurance or lawyer's office. There are plenty of notaries around.

My grandmother needed a paper notarized in connection with a final inheritance distribution from her brother's estate. My mother took her to the local Washington Mutual branch that has her checking account, savings accounts, and several CDs. They wouldn't do the notarizing. Some bull that some things they can't do, but never gave a more specific reason. Ridiculous.

Gary - does Maytag have their own research and design team? How about management team? Do they have their own factories where they only produce Maytag appliances ? Nope they pretty much cease to exist. The few factories that are still open are an old Amana plant from that acquisition and that scion of cooking Magic Chef ! Maytag 's only value is in its name. Now , lets look at Gaggenau. While they are under they Bosch ownership umbrella , they have their own mgmt. team, in Gaggenau Germany. Their own factories where they produce Gaggenau appliances, and more importantly, a capable R&D dept. that comes up with things like full surface induction tops, side hinged ovens, pop up column vents, side hinged ovens. Some of that is shared across Bosch's other brands, like the induction, and some is not - like the ventilator. I'll let you slide on this one since your a techie instead of a big picture management guy. But, how bout gettin a clue before you start looking for interesting things next time. Lots of parts are shared in the industry, and not just within corp. entities. There are only a few fridge compressors on the market. Does that make Kitchen Aid a marketing arm of Sub Zero because the compressor will fit both ? How about the light bulb that fits your Electrolux and a thermador too? What about the door hinges that Bosch and Tdor and Gaggenau use on their fridges? Miele has the same thing too. That's a whole separate discussion because of the shared factory, but by your logic it'd make them just a " marketing arm" because the same part is shared. Why don't you offer some reasons why one should buy Maytag instead of trying to pick a scrap with me and crapping on some other brand to deflect away from what the OP asked. And speaking of interesting and tellin it like it is, why didn't you include your beloved Electrolux on your list of poor service companies and those that don't do their own service? Inquiring minds find a THAT interesting.

First, the defrost pan on my 6 year old freezer failed. I couldn't get anyone to give me service on it so I called to ask what the resistance should be on the 2 different heaters. That was when I was told they do not offer diagnostic help via the phone. I explained I wanted the specification not help diagnosing but I was told no help over the phone and then disconnected. I finally tested and realized which one was not working. Got on the Thermador parts site and ordered the parts which they had in stock (I was pleasantly surprised). I ordered the parts and they offered two day shipping so I paid the $17.00 for the two day shipping. After receiving the tracking information, I checked the shipment status on Wednesday. It shipped on Monday and was scheduled to arrive the following Monday but it was now going to arrive early on Friday.... I should have received the parts on Wednesday. I called customer service and explained my disappointment and asked for reimbursement of the $17.00 charge for two day shipping. First I was told they could not reimburse me and I asked why they couldn't since I didn't receive it? Then I was told I had to file a claim with the shipping company. When asked how they would reimburse me for something I paid to Thermador, I was transferred to another department that deals with builders(?). She explained she could not do anything but submitted it to management for review and follow-up. I received a call Friday stating they could not reimburse me for shipping charges with no explanation other than when they shipped it on Monday it was after the cut off time for the two day shipping (Is this my fault?). I paid for this with a credit card so I submitted a dispute with them and within 15 minutes of filing the dispute I received a credit of $17.00. I don't think I will utilize Thermador directly for anything else should the need arise. It leaves me to wonder what would have happened if I didn't receive all of the parts? Would I have been refunded for the parts not actually shipped?

Oh my word! What an ordeal. I had a go around w/Cox this last week. They charge outrageously if you have to have them out. We had an amplifier plug/box thingy that either overheated and the plastic fell apart, or it got blown out by a power surge. It's a part they give you to set up your computer/router/internet stuff. Key word: SELF SERVICE. I took a pic of it and went into the store to see if I could get a replacement. Store #1 suggested I go to store #2. Nope none there either. But the assistant manager was extremely helpful, added the $5.00 insurance to my bill, and lowered it as well, set up an appointment for a technician to come out and assured me that I would NOT have to pay for the tech guy to come out and replace the box. (plug on one end goes into wall, another goes into the computer, and then it plugs into the battery backup/surge protector. Not complicated.) I get an email saying the tech person is coming on Monday and it'll cost $100. (Just like the manager said I would....and not to worry.) Bill comes next week. I got billed $100 for the tech AND they jacked up my internet charge $20. #@XX^%$ I called the 800 #. Went through robo-hell, pushed all the numbers finally get to the right department, and they were closed. Didn't know they closed at all. So I did the online chat thing.... "We sent you an email saying it would cost $100 so there's nothing we can do." Yeah well you also told me I wouldn't be charged. All this time, they kept telling my "your time is golden" and "your important to us" yadda yadda.... If my time is so "golden" why is this so difficult to resolve?? So I made a trip back to store #2. The young lady took the $100 charge off, undid whatever was done to raise my internet charge, and worked some magic and lowered my bill $40. I am a happy camper. At the moment. We'll see what the next bill brings.

Good customer service - or the lack of it - is one of the primary reasons I frequent certain retailers and avoid others like the plague. It certainly seems to be in short supply these days! It may very well be regional differences or the size of the establishment but most better retail nurseries and garden centers in my area have dedicated plant buyers on staff whose business it is to locate and order specific plants from the scores of wholesale growers they have access to. I was one, once upon a time :-)) Each week we received availabilities from the growers as to what was in stock, looking good and available that week and I would place my perennials and groundcover orders accordingly. The buyer for trees and woody shrubs would do the same, although most of the trees were preordered the previous fall. Most of the larger nurseries will accept special requests as well. That's how my long desired Spigelia 'Little Redhead' came into my life! 😁 LaLennoxa, I hope you can locate and get your hands on the Ruby Slippers oakleaf. I grew one in a previous garden and it truly is a stunning plant. Very floriferous and with gorgeous late season and fall coloring. My sister and I were out shopping for some supplies for my new garden last week - essentials like a new hose and a weed whacker - so we stopped at Home Depot. This is a retailer I only visit when it seems to be the last resort or the best pricing as a) their plant selection is dismal and not well cared for and b) decent customer service is almost nonexistent. We were pleasantly surprised when an employee in his early 20's went above and beyond the typical to assist 2 little old ladies pick out the proper weed whacker for the situation, showing us several different models he thought best, and then proceeded to carry the selected item to the check out for us. He was so helpful and attentive that we both had to compliment him on his superior customer service!! So it does exist and sometimes in unexpected places, if maybe not as commonplace as it should be.

I have a friend who is a Notary Public. She had to take a class and pay a fee for her license and stamp. Maybe none of the bank employees was ever trained/maybe the bank doesn't reimburse them for such an expense?

Most bank branches of any size have a person authourized to notarize.

Maybe the bank person involved knew your Mom - but not your Grand-mom.

Asking them to testify that she's who she says she is ...

... is asking them to stick their neck out, somewhat.

Many bank workers are not renowned as risk-takers.

There's no excuse for that. I went to my bank several months ago, with someone who was not a bank customer, and we had a joint document notarized. Notaries are not required to know a person, only to confirm adequate ID. While it's reasonable to charge a modest fee, the idea that this person wouldn't notarize your brother's signature is ridiculous. That's the point at which I ask politely to speak to a supervisor, and then the supervisor's supervisor, if that doesn't work. Yes, you should take you business elsewhere, and take a moment to write a short and direct note to the bank's president explaining your unhappiness.

Joyfulguy, I assume your post is a response to mine. My grandmother is the one who needed the notarization, not my mother. My mother and I both have signature rights on her accounts, not to mention my parents also have accounts at this branch. My family has been banking at this location (with the same employees being there) for more than 20 years, through several institution/name changes. They know us. All of us. The branch does have a notary public, I've had things done there in the past. They just refused to do this particular item, for some reason that was not adequately explained.

Hi dadoes,

I was assuming that your mother was the one who had the account with them.

And that your grandmother was probably unknown to the person with whom your mother was having the problem.

Often ideas are expressed here assuming certain things - which often are only part of the picture.

Sorry if I was a bit abrupt.

I've had things notarized at my local bank. No, I do not have an account there. It is only a couple blocks from my home and easier than going to the city to my own bank. All I need is ID. I've never been charged.
