I tried the "Montreal" melon about 10 years ago, received it mail order from a company in Canada. Melons as a rule do poorly here; too little heat in Summer, and too short a season. "Montreal", however, managed to ripen a few... and that was direct seeded, transplants would have done better. They are pretty large, and the vines produce a good set; but the green flesh is not as thick as we are used to. Good flavor, though. It was my intent to save seed, but I grew a mis-labeled cucumber that year which turned out to be Armenian cucumber... which is a melon, and will cross with "Montreal". They were directly adjacent, so the seed from both could not be saved. :-( When I tried to order more the next year, the supplier said they could no longer ship to the U.S. Good as I thought it was, that description by KGS is a little over the top, IMO. I wouldn't mind growing it again, so I may order some seed as well.

Bob Walsh covers Mimi's egg-rooting method in his book on "How to grow plumeria-frangipani anytime anywhere", btw. Still miss the "Aloha Plumeria" forum though...and Mimi, too. I hope she's happy in her life, and stress-free. I'm currently rooting a bonus plumeria with an egg, and an Oahu Star cutting w/o one, -since I only had one egg available when potting them up. The bonus cutting is showing tip changes on it, already, but I can't consider this a fair test, as the Oahu Star cutting was considerably thicker than the mystery (gift) cutting was, when I rec'd them. To do a fair comparative test, I think I'd have to use 2 cuttings from the same source and root them the same way, (except for placing an egg under only one of them).

It's popular because it's been around for a long time and people have used it for years with good results. It's not to say that there aren't better fertilizers out there - there might be, but a lot of the other ones at the big box stores tend to be "fly-by-night" type companies in my experience. I first tried tomato-tone because I was familiar with the company that makes it "Espoma" from previous experience with using their holly-tone - which my father has used for years with great results.

Hi Owbist and Raven, Thank you for your information. The Norton Safe Web Lite popped up on my computer and I decided to try it to see what it does and to my surprise I see no problems with it and it shows on the side of all of the websites if it is safe or questionable. The good ones have a checkmark inside the color green and the questionable ones are in gray, so I stay away from those. I like this kind of thing because I have often wondered about accidently clicking on something in a search and getting hit with something I wouldn't want. This way it gives me something to judge by. I have Norton Antivirus on this computer, so I thought why not try theirs first. I will save your info Raven just in case I would need to change to it.
