What anti-inflammatory do you use?

I was recently told by my Sports Doctor that I could take anti-inflammatories after my long runs (I'm training with a personal trainer for the Honolulu Marathon.), and I was wondering what anti-inflammatory you all use and why. I'm sort of caught between naproxen (aleve) and ibuprofen (advil). I get these aches in my left knee after my long runs and have tried both, but am unsure which one works better for me. I do know that the naproxen seems to work better for my headaches over the ibuprofen, so that makes me lean towards naproxen, but I'm unsure... Help!!

Hi Lucky How is that trainer of yours doing:):)?
I was told to use Celebrex ////they say it is easy on the liver...I have not used it much //sorry I can't tell you more.Maybe try a search..Oh ya good luck in the marathon.Sounds like you are doing great.

Hey there. It's me "Lucky", but I actually decided to change my nickname to another one of my nicknames that I go by. Long story... Anyway...

To make a long story short, I'm with a new trainer now and he's just as hot. Whooo! And I'm actually dating this one... The other one I just played with a little. (Grin) My old trainer left to follow his dream to be an actor. (Don't fall for those striving actors people! Ha!) It's good that he did though because in the end I've met a much better guy. (Grin) Anyway...

I just went back to my Sports Doc and he prescribed me Celebrex, which did not work even on my short run day. I could feel shin splints and other pain coming on soon into my run. Ugh. I have the 200 mg capsules and was told to take one twice a day. So for my long run today I still took mega advil, which totally helped. I don't know what to do... I know that celebrex is better for me, but it just doesn't cut it for the pain. I guess I need a pain killer? I don't know... Help!?

I know this thread is old, but I'll post this for the benefit of anyone that finds it in a search... I have the Black & Decker Edge Hog and I am waiting for it to die so I can replace it with a gas-powered model. The corded design is fine for smallish yards, and in fact works very well just edging my driveway...but once your range expands, the cord is a major PITA. It gets in your way, it gets hung up on trees/obstacles, and generally just drags the edger as your working it. The problem is, the dang thing is so durable, I'm not sure it's going to die anytime soon, now after 5+ years of use. Maybe I should just unload it on the in-laws.

I hardly wear makeup anymore. Recently thought I have noticed wrinkles when I have makeup around my eyes - they seem to be more noticeable with makeup on. I'm not a religious cream user although I have tried many products I tend to wind up using my hand cream. In the winter it's Vaseline Intensive Care Water Resistent formula. I figure every wrinkle is earned - a story behind each and every crease. I'd love to buy nice creams but I never stick to any regime. My favourite is Clinique daily moisturizer - I just don't have the stomach to spend the money on it these days.

There is no good reason you can't eat when taking thyroid meds. That's why you take the meds on an empty stomach and don't eat for an hour so they are absorbed into your blood stream. Once in the blood they are unaffected by food and most other medications. I am quite sure that cabbage probably does have anti-inflammatory properties. But the question is how much would you have to actually eat to b get the real benefits. Most modern medications have their historical roots going back to things found in plants and nature. However it similar to drinking cranberry juice to ease the pain of a bladder infection. You would have to drink gallons. One AZO pill or gallons of juice? I'll take the pill.

Our kitty started displaying symptoms of IBD at less than two years old, and it took a year of diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, and constant vet visits to figure it out. I remember how frustrating it was - how sometimes he'd pee or poop just outside of the litter box, and we couldn't help but feel it was to spite us somehow. Now we know better, and that he truly couldn't help it and was really sick. Any out-of-litterbox activity from him is now an immediate sign that something is off, and we need to switch his diet. Hubs and I started him on a new diet as well as steroids asap, and that did the trick. It took a while to find foods he was ok with - you have to test each meat type for a few weeks to see if there's a reaction. Lamb and Venison are the only two so far that he doesn't react to - rabbit and duck seemed ok at first, but gunked him up after a few weeks. After 8 months we weaned him off the steroids (slowly!) per a new vet's recommendation since he's such a young cat. His energy is back, he's gained weight back up to a healthy level (it took forever though), and he's his old self again. The diet that I found to be effective for him is a mix of: organic canned pumpkin for fiber feline antioxidants - I use Ark Naturals NuPet Cat Antioxidant Nature's Variety Limited Ingredient Lamb OR Natural Balance Venison and Green Pea - I usually vary them morning and evening feline probiotics/prebiotics/enzymes sprinkled on top, not mixed in. I use Wholistics Pet Organics Feline Digest-All Plus Supplement. At the beginning, I would also mix in a little Rad Cat Raw Diet to get him to eat more since I was so worried about his weight. Hope this helps! It seems expensive at first to go the wet food route, but it's so much less expensive than vet visits and meds. It's also worth it to see him happy and healthy again!

Nike...Must be nice to have your own trainer(chuckle).
Good luck with finding the right meds,but maybe the body is trying to tell you to slow down if only for little while.

Note that for ibuprofen to work, you need to take at least 400MG or 600, which equates to 2 or 3 tabs. (A certain minimum blood threshold must be reached.) I always take 3 for any kind of inflammation or headache problem and for me, it is the best. Also, FYI, the Rx strength is 800MG. The main thing to watch w ibuprofen is to not take it on an empty stomach - it is really tough on the lining of your stomach.

If you are in pain your body is trying to tell you something, and I think it's saying "The knees don't want to do the Marathon!"

If you insist on not listening to your body parts, take it BEFORE the run. It's easier to minimize problems than fix them after they are under way.

Try both and see which works. Also, Arnica rubs can help, as do sports linaments and cremes.

I agree with Lazygardens, though I'm just a 3-4x a week exerciser - I always take Advil before the workout, and rarely hurt too much afterwards. Which is saying a lot!

My mom's going to be on celebrex for the rest of her life, since she refuses to exercise...

I have a scrip for vioxx in case my back flares up, but the pain in my knees and ankles is from years of abuse, and I have found that stretching frequently (3x/day) helped...

but I'm one of the people for whom the chondriton/glucosamine and Calcium/Magnesium supplements have proved a miracle cure...and I think I was 7 when I first tore up my ankles!

I can go about two weeks without the suplements before my joints start muttering at me, and it takes about 3 days for them to shut up again, but then I can cut back to one dose every other day, and it's been working fine...

but I also bike instead of run, which puts far less stress on my knees.
