Woul;d walking or bike riding be better for You???
Comments (10)I was ill for years, lost a lot of weight and a lot of muscle mass. At one point, my knees were so weak that I had to crawl up the stairs. I found some gentle knee exercises that I did to strengthen my knees (actually, my thigh muscles) before I ever started working out. This website is about what I did. Now that my knees are stronger, I do both the treadmill and the recumbant bike, plus the Nautilus circuit. All of them seem to be working, because I can now easily go up and down stairs. Thanks, and good luck! Here is a link that might be useful: Gentle knee exercises...See MoreBike riding - builds muscle or tones?
Comments (6)By "help" for your thighs and backside, I assume you mean slim them down. Exercising them will increase muscle tone, which will decrease their size some. The typical wisdom is that weight training builds muscle mass (strength), but aerobics enhances cardiovascular fitness (stamina). The third objective is flexibility -- so you need to stretch. To answer your specific question about the effect of bike riding on your calves (I assume you ride a stationary bike) -- I do not think that bike riding works you calves very much. Body builders who want to work on their calves typically do a routine in which they go from a regular standing position to standing on their toes. If you do a few repetitions of that with weights, you really feel it in your calves. If you are bike riding, the bike will work your thighs, but I'm not so sure about your backside. The other thing you should consider is that a good aerobics program combined with a careful weight control diet will probably achieve an overall slimming in time. Trying to "shape" your body by exercising certain muscle systems is very difficult, and is not likely to meet with much success. Body builders spend 5-6 hours a day every day to achieve some of that and in the end what they achieve is mostly determined by their genes and only in part by their efforts. Really successful body builders are just lucky they have the "right" genes. You might find a book like "Fitness for Dummies" helpful in giving you a realistic perspective on what you can expect to achieve in your exercise program....See MoreWhat Can I Send To Son On Bike Ride?
Comments (13)Trudy, that's an ambitious ride, good for your son. I'd offer to give them a meal if they were anywhere near Michigan. I agree with the "light and portable" issue, and of course the mailing/staleness/arrive intact thing is always a concern. How about some homemade high protein snack bars? Amanda always liked these, made with chocolate chips in place of the carob, and you could add those pecans Lars mentioned. PROTEIN SNACK BARS Melt together 1/2 cup butter, 1 cup peanut butter, 1 (12 ounce) package carob chips. Pour over a mixture of 1/2 cup sesame seeds, 1 cup coconut, 1 cup wheat germ, 1 cup nuts, and 1/2 cup sunflower seeds. Pat into a 9 x 13 inch pan and cut into bars. Powdered drink mixes like Gatorade would be nice for a change from plain water and snacks like jerky or those little packages of nuts or individual peanut butter packages, I've seen them in tubes. I don't know what they'll do about food, are they eating out? They'll need lots of calories to bike those miles every day, so a little research might tell you what options are available and a gift card to a restaurant, etc., could be nice. Does he have a favorite treat? Biscotti travel well and are nearly indestructible, LOL, and gingersnaps get there intact packed inside a Pringles tube, I think other cookies would travel fine that way too. Comments (21)Only an idiot would do this and I speak from experience. Many years ago, I hopped on my son's bike and took my Afghan hound for a run. Bad move, a very stupidly bad move. She bolted, I was thrown from the bike and had a major concussion. It was like a soap opera. I had amnesia. To this very day I can't tell you my name...just kidding... but I lost three days of my life. This happened on a Monday night and two days before I had bought a room size braided rug at John Wanamakers for the new house we had just moved into. After my fall, I walked into the living room and gasped..where did this rug come from? So , no a very bad idea. Another tragic story concerning dogs and accidents.....my very best friend from age 13 and a big animal lover too had a mastiff who weighed 160 pounds. About four years ago she took the dog out at midnight and the dog pulled her over and she smashed her head on the walk. She was unconscious for a few hours, came to and her husband took her to the hospital. Over these last years her condition deteriorated into Parkinsons and a year ago she was put into a home and last month had a feeding tube put in. She is flat on her back and cannot speak. So people , be careful with your dogs....See Moreawm03
