Ice skating for weight loss

Does anyone here ice skate for exercise? I don't necessarily mean speed skating or formal figure skating, but plain old open-skating-at-the-neighborhood-ice-arena skating. Do you find that it helps you lose weight?

Any activity you do is better than sitting in front of TV or the computer. Whether it helps you lose weight probably depends on how long you skate, how vigorously you skate, and how you are eating. You can make small changes in your diet and along with added exercise, you can lose. Slow steady weight loss is the best because you adapt to a new way of eating and you begin to enjoy walking, skating or whatever exercise you choose. Good luck.

I try but I like doing the fresstyle sessions not the public skate. I try to hire a coach for a private lesson *once in a while - so I can learn how to skate backwards.

It is great cardio if you can get the speed up. Keep upper body straight, core control. Arms extended. Knees slightly bent and toes pointed forward. You lean too much in front and you will end up on toe picks. Lean back and you can fall.

The edges should really grip the ice, be sure your blades are sharpened to your level - pond skater or if you are in a class. They may seem sticky at first, tho.

Use blade guards when off the ice.

Be sure that inside edge really grips the ice before PUSH and hold leg out. It is lots of fun!!!

We went to the movies last night and I packed myself some carrot stick and hummus and a big bottle of water, instead of splurging on a bucket of popcorn and diet soda. You know what, I didn't even miss it. But I will admit to buying a package of peanut M&Ms, but I only had them after the carrots, and I only had 10. :-) I'm still hovering around 27 lbs of weight loss. Still working on the last few pounds. I fell off the exercise bandwagon last week, but I going to get back on it this week.

Congrats on the 46 pounds. I agree with you about the fact that we overweight types need to watch and count what we are eating, and that's a permanent thing. I just ran across the Hacker's diet, by John Walker. Not much really new in that book, but being an engineer, I could relate to his way of explaining it. Anyway, what he says is that we lack the feedback mechanism that some have to naturally control their weight. It's like being nearsighted. If you are nearsighted, you have to wear glasses. If we quit wearing glasses, we won't be able to see, and if we quit watching our weight, we will get fat again. Msgirl: mineral oil is effective in controlling rose-scale pest. Khalid asked excellent questions in his thread "organic treatment ...", so I re-post some info. here. Johnson Baby oil is the same as mineral oil, except it reeks of perfume. Very depressing middle of the week. First, I had to "purge" for a colonoscopy. So on Wed. I only was allowed to drink, and my calorie intake was under 300. Then the day of the procedure, I only ate 916 calories, so my two-day total was just over 1200. And yet when I stepped on the scale this morning, I had gained almost two pounds, erasing almost three weeks of dieting. I know it is just a temporary spike, but of all times, this would not seem to be the day I would spike like that. It is also depressing that weeks of dieting can be erased in two days. Imagine if I had eaten a lot those two days! It just drives home the point to me that it is going to be very difficult for me to lose a lot more weight and keep it off. I'm happy I stopped gaining and my clothes still fit, but I really wanted to lose about ten more lbs . . . and keep it off. It's clearly not my calorie consumption . . . I also got depressing news on the gut end. Well actually not just the end, the whole GI system. I have acid reflux, even though I had no symptoms, but it has affected my esophagus. I have gastric ulcers (probably payback from using so much NSAIDs for migraine) and diverticulosis. So my diet is going to have to be even more restricted. I am very hesitant to start taking acid reducing pills every single day. It seems so extreme. But I can't imagine limiting my diet much more. Well, for now, out totally with caffeine and alcohol, no spicy foods, but tomatoes onions and garlic? I don't eat huge amounts of them, but I love Italian and other Mediterranean food and they are pretty ubiquitous for that . . . The treatment for diverticulosis is to eat more fiber, which I can hardly imagine since I eat whole grains and beans and vegetables and fruit every single day . . . more greens, boo rah! I love greens thankfully. It's just one more frustrating thing in my life.

I recently retired and my husband and I have gotten back to ice skating. Love it - we do go to adult sessions and one is even free not far from us on a Friday morning. If they do not have recorded music I suggest an mp3 player (example) with a head phone w/ music you can get a good hard skate. It is wonderful exercise and we love the adult sessions. Unfortunately there are not too many of them around compared to 30 years ago when they were all around us and we would go twice a week with so much fun with the huge crowd. Give it a try if you live in the Cleveland/Medina County of Ohio I can let you know where to go. Hope that helps - right now at 65 years of age we look forward to your ice skating sessions and the people. have fun!

Ice skating can help you to replace fat with muscles. This is even easier if you are doing figure skating, which will need you to use lots of muscles. As with any type of exercise, you should do some stretching before skating. This will warm your body up and minimize the risks of pulling or straining your muscles.
