tax credit for hybrid cars

Does anyone know the definitive answer on the tax credit for 2006? The IRS says it drops from a high of $2000 to 500, but there are also vague references to the fact that it was extended. I am having a hard time making sense of it. If it ends with 12/31/05, we will buy a Prius quickly.
