Blown insulation - R Factor in Dallas and roof pitch?

We are getting estimates for blown insulation and we were told by one guy that because we have a very low pitch on our roof (I think he said 5:12) that we wouldn't need as much insulation as say a person with a house with a high pitch (12:12). Is that true?

We are also being told we need 18 inches total insulation making it an R49. Is that about right or too much or too little?

Hi,
I don't see why a steep pitched roof needs more insulation -- did he say why he thought that?

It can be harder to get a lot of insulation at the outer edge of shallow pitched roofs just because there is not much clearance.

The attached link give Energy Star recommendations for attic insulation by climate.
The R49 looks in the ball park for total insulation level for Texas.

Hopefully they are planning to use cellulose and not fiberglass.
