It was a style of embroidery that was always done on gingham, and mostly on aprons. The thread color either matched the gingham color or they used white. It was an very different stitch that either blocked out the colored squares, with the white thread, or the white square, with the colored thread, to form simple pictures or patterns.

Is it common anymore?
