Embird - HELP!! I'm confused

I am new to the digitizing world and I need some help!! My machine will only do 4x4 so I am wondering if I can split an appliqu� in Embird. For example, I have a football helmet that I want to make bigger. Can I split the helmet, stitch that half out completely then re hoop to stitch out and connect the other half? If so, how???
