A question from a newbie

I'm wondering about the possibility of removing stitching from an vintage bowling shirt. This shirt is in great shape, but is at least 35 years old with wording professionally (I'm guessing) embroidered on the back and above the breast pocket.

I'd like to remove (or have removed) the original embroidery and possibly have it professionally replaced with some of my choosing.

Is it possible that this could work out? Can the original embroidery be safely removed? Dare I hope the fabric beneath it, once it's gone, will be in good shape?

Any and all advice and feedback is appreciated.

You can remove embroidery if you're very careful, but with a shirt that old it will probably not come out easily, and you'll probably discover that the fabric not under the embroidery has faded.

One solution would be to embroider the new design on separate fabric and applique it to the shirt over the old embroidery.

Another solution would be to get a new shirt and embroider that, and keep the old one as is.
