Help with embroidering letters

Please help! I bought the 270D specifically to make T-shirts for our family reunion. I followed all the directions but every time I tell it to start it tells me to choose a design. Can someone please talk me through embroidering the words "Family Reunion 2006". I thought this would be so easy and such fun, now I am just frustrated.

I don't have your machine. Don't you have an instruction manuel?

Are you using Brothers PE-Design or other software such as Embroidery Office or Embird, or are you using the built in fonts and lettering? What size hoop, a single hoop (like the one that comes with the machine) or larger multi-position?
