Monogram Question

When doing a monogram, is it always three initials which are used? And whose initials are to be used? For example, if I am giving a gift of pillowcases or napkins to my MIL, would it be her first name initial, followed by maiden name, and married name? What about for a male relative? I don't have any monogram software, but thought perhaps I could experiment with the fonts I do have, maybe lenthen the stitch for each letter. I have not started embroidery yet, although I do have a bernina 165E. thank you

Monograms are personal issues for married women. Some use their middle name as the middle initial & some use their maiden name. If all the letters are the same size, I go first, middle or maiden then last.

If it is couple, I go male, last, female with last larger than the other 2.

I use 3 most often on everything & the last in the center & bigger than the other 2.

Napkins get harder in a small corner. I usually just use the last initial.

Lots of pillowcases use His, Hers, Yours, Mine, Mr, Mrs & etc.
