Waterproofing patches

Hi,

I have been embroidering patches that contain some ink from an ink jet printer. How would I waterproof these patches to prevent the ink from running? Is there some kind of spray I can use? Also how do you recommend I wash the clothing with the patch on --- Hand wash?
