hooping knit hats

Is there a secret to hooping knit hats? It seems to thick and slippery, so I was wondering what the secret was! This is the 5x7 hoop with the Brother SE270D. Or...hmm..is this where you use the spray to stick it to a piece of stabilizer that is hooped??
