Lost sound on my computer.

Once again I need your help.
I have been persuaded to "Skype".
So I bought a webcam; and now when I am about to install it, I discover that there is no (as in none whatsoever) sound from the speakers.
I have no idea when the sound system went out. It could be as long as six months ago.
I have no idea where to start.
From the control panel, I see that the sound system is working well.
The system is a "Dell Inspiron"; the operating system is
"Windows 7 Home Premium" - 64 bit.
Processor: Pentium R Dual-Core CPU E5800 @ 3.20GHz.

By sound system do you mean the sound drivers in as per viewed in control panel or a physical system of speakers and amps recognized by the computer?

It could be one of many things if you have a complicated sound system. but if you only have a pair of speakers plugged in directly to the laptop we just might be able to help out. do give us details.

There are two speakers plugged into separate jacks in the back of the 'tower'.
