Remote control problem

I don't think there's any easy solution to this problem, but I just thought I'd ask in case someone had this problem before.

I just bought a decent home theater system from my friend, with all the bells and whistles (RCA RT2600) and the problem is this...

When I turn my RCA television on, the stereo turns on... the volume is also controlled by the TV remote. However, I cannot get the amplifier to turn OFF. it will turn ON with the remote, but not OFF.

So essentially, I sit down, pop the TV on, hit POWER. The TV and the stereo go on. I have to get up to turn the amplifier off. This defeats the purpose of using remotes at all!

The way I see it, the only solutions are to get rid of the stereo, get a new TV, or cover up the remote sensor on the amplifier, and just control it manually. Any other ideas? Thanks!
