Laptop Alternatives?

My old laptop is expiring. I don't need a mighty machine. I just do email, surf the web, and write the odd document to print out.

Am I dreaming, or could I be happy with an I-Pad (or similar) + a keyboard? I'd like to be able to do everything I now do on my laptop plus e-read books, newspapers, magazines. How would I put all that together? What would it cost? Do the pads work with my current broadband wireless?

My laptop has a 15" screen. Would I go bonkers with the smaller I-Pad screen?

If you use an I-Pad or similar, do you like it? Do you think it can replace a laptop, or is it another creature alltogether? Obviously, I know nothing about I-Pads and Apps and what they cost -- not just to buy but subscriptions.
