default digital alarm clock radio is defening -- help!

We have a Sharper Image Sound Soother Alarm Clock that we can no longer return. I am trying to figure out how we might be able to alter the default volume setting on the alarm part of the clock. Both the Beep alarm and the radio alarm start off soft but quickly jump to heart-stopping volumes (and this isn't adjustable from the oustide). There is nothing pleasant about waking to this alarm clock. If I opened up the clock radio, would there be a way to adjust the default volume setting for the alarms? Can anyone guide me? Here is a link to this ridiculously expensive clock radio:

Doubtful. As I shopped for a clock radio that could handle my iPod, several reviewers noted exactly the same behavior in several different models, ostensibly from different companies -- either the alarm sound defaults to "11" or gets to "11" very quickly. The manufacturer (whichever sadistic company is doing this) can mess with it, but you probably cannot and still have the alarm clock -- um, alarm.

If I were you I would either relegate it to the guest room and warn guests or try to sell it to a heavy sleeper.
