dvd disc won't record

We have a dvd recorder (Phillips) that hadn't been used in some time. The other day when I decided to try and record I got an error message. Looking at other dvds that we had been able to record on, they were the Maxell brand DVD+RW ... these particular ones that we had just bought were DVD+RW, but Memorex brand. Is there that much of a difference between the two that it would affect being able to record?

I have misplaced my owners manual and unable to find it online; I hope someone may be able to clue me in here. Thanks!
