need help setting up home theater!

I've recently moved. At my old house, I had a Sony receiver hooked up to two bookcase speakers, Dish, and a DVD player. At the new house there is a TV mounted on the wall and the only access is an HDMI cable running behind the wall, and my older receiver did not have HDMI input so I bought a new one. On my old system I could turn on the tv and watch with sound coming from the tv speakers, so that with one remote I could adjust volume and change channels. Now, I have to turn on the receiver and use two remotes. My receiver (Pioneer 1019) is supposed to have the capability of "pass through" so that the dish can pass through with sound coming through tv speakers, but when I turn that on, the cd's and radio also play through the tv. Should I return my receiver? Should the tv be connected to dish receiver and then dish receiver connected to receiver? Help! Thank you for any ideas you might have.
