TV in front of fireplace

Please don't think I'm totally nuts. We would like to get a flat screen TV for our LR. The big question is where to put it. We don't seem to have a place along any of the walls that would provide good viewing. Wall mount is out because of block wood paneling. I keep looking at the fireplace opening on a raised brick hearth and wondering if we could place it there. We do not use the fireplace but maybe once a year. Has anyone ever placed their TV in front of the fireplace opening?

I wouldn't put it there. A fire place can be cold, sometimes damp depending on the weather and dusty.

If I understand you, you want to sacrifice the fireplace to provide a location for the TV. I think that is a perfectly good idea.

I put my LCD on a stand in front of my fireplace and it was great. If you are worried about cold and damp, seal the face of the fireplace with a nice panel that has insulation on the backside.

You can probably find a disc with a fire on it for show.
