We did notify the friend right away (fortunately, without (forwarding anything), just in case, but in the process of getting the software for my husband, our young friend had taken over his i-Pad--no doubt as a kindness to "the elderly," done all the necessary things for him, and in the process given someone his birth date and email address. He doesn't know if she gave them to the coffee shop so as to use its WiFi, or to the company offering the free software. Knowing that public WiFi can be dangerous, I assume that his email address had been intercepted and used in a phishing attempt or perhaps to install malware. Many years ago, I got the Hiloti virus by clicking on a PDF notice purporting to be from UPS about being unable to deliver a package--just on the day I was expecting one. Wouldn't have clicked on the PDF if it weren't for that. The minute I clicked on the Adobe PDF file that claimed to contain the details of what to do to claim my package, poof, it disappeared and my PC subsequently went haywire. I really learned my lesson, and now we are careful to check with the sender if anything is the least suspicious. I didn't know it could be dangerous for us to forward such an email, but would have phoned the friend in advance to make sure she didn't click on anything. Full scans using both Norton and Trend Micro's House Call failed to detect anything dangerous, so with that and your kind answer, I guess I can sleep tonight! Thank you for the link to the tips, too. Well, I found out this morning that Comcast had a major hack a couple MONTHS ago, over 30 million accounts affected. I read it on a site, Comcast never notified customers, which in my book makes it even more egregious. I wondered what was up with the password change stuff going on last month, of course phone rep didn't say a thing. So that's probably what's causing all the spam. And who knows what else. It's like a full-time job keeping up with one's information anymore, it seems every day some major company is hacked. I put a fraud alert on my accounts because of the recent health care system breach -- a few large healthcare systems got hacked this past summer in SE Michigan. Is the convenience of technology worth it? Call me a dinosaur, call me what you will, I don't care -- I grew up in the days before the internet and IMO no, it's not worth it. I'd gladly go back to snail mail and {gasp} waiting a week or two for something, and if somebody stole your purse yea you'd worry about losing maybe a couple hundred bucks and your credit cards, but we didn't worry about identify theft and all that for the most part. (I'm sure it happened but probably only rarely, now it's just so commonplace). We had problems, sure, but I'll take those low-tech problems any day over all this mess that's been created. "Seriously, take action and get a new gmail address." Yes, I definitely have to do that don't I, especially in light of the breach.
