If you're calling Sears, do it quick because they're closing 265 stores. The one nearest me is down to selling the fixtures.

Look for the installer's name on the garage door or near the mount for the opener. If no name was posted, then look at the name plate on the opener to identify the manufacturer, and then look for dealers in your area that carry that brand. Ask them to recommend a repairman. Before you contact an unknown repairman, check him out at your local Better Business Bureau (BBB).

If you have neighbors or friends with garage door openers, ask them if they could recommend a repair service, or know of one that is reliable.

Changing a garage door opener is simple. A new opener is usually under $300. Most places will install it for another $100. However, you may have a bigger problem. Often times a broken spring can cause an opener to fail. That might cost you another $200 to $400. I would highly recommend you search out a garage door company in your area. Call a few different places and tell them you need an opener and, possibly, a spring replacement. They will be able to give you a quote on the phone. Once you find a "Guy" you can trust. He will recommend a regular maintenance schedule for your door(s); It's worth it.
