What do they use to kill subterranean termites?

A termite inspector tells me his company uses a tobacco based product to get rid of subterranean termites. I have an organic garden against the house so I'd like to know how safe it is to have this tobacco stuff in the ground. He said it's safe but looking online I found a link that said tobacco for termite control has been "cancelled" and is no longer used. Now I'm really confused, is he planning on using a banned substance?

What do most termite companies use to get rid of subterranean termites?

It probably is just ineffective, or possibly linked to toxicity in animals (tobacco is poisonous - one cig's worth of tobacco, if eaten, can make a child very ill). Is there no way you can just set up a permanent barrier of some sort, because if they're subterranean, the first batch might die, but what about the next, and the next?
