Very Old Dried Sap on Trim Work

We recently bought an older home and one of the reasons I like it so well is the trim work around the doors. It looks to be cedar, and what I thought was a very bad staining job has turned out to be dried sap, probably many years old. Does anyone know of a way to remove this? I tried sanding and paint stripper, which turned it into a gummy mess. Any help would be appreciated.

What kind of paint remover did you try?

Sap can be scraped off and surface wiped with mineral spirits to remove residues before sanding and refinishing.
