Turning a Disaster Around.

Yesterday I started a load of wash then went out to pick up a few groceries. When I came home, I saw the hose had popped off the back of the clothes washer and all the wash and rinse water had been dumped on the basement floor. I stopped the washer, reattached the hose, then grabbed lots of towels and set to soaking up the water. I then hung the towels outside to drip-dry. This morning there were still some signs of the flood, a few damp spots. So I grabbed some sudsy ammonia , mixed with water and scrubbed the entire floor. I then rinsed and dry-mopped the best I could. When it's done air-drying I'll have a completely clean floor. It was really gross, as that's the room where I keep my cat's litter box, and she has a tendency to kick the litter granules onto the floor. If you've ever dealt with a cat box, you know that cat litter plus water equals slimy slippery dirty sludge. So now my floor is clean, and I turned a disaster into an opportunity to get the whole floor clean.

All's well that ends well I guess.

When I was a kid in Michigan, we had at least one incident of the sewer backing up out of the floor drain the basement laundry. Now most 'sewage' is 98% water, of course very polluted, but still water. This looked like sewage sludge, or liquified poop.

So count your blessings. :-]

RE: Turning a Disaster Around.

I've had toilets back up a couple of times, so I know from sewage. When my basement toilet backs up, it means my cesspool is full. It's supposed to be pumped out evey few years. When we first moved in, the prior owner had had it pumped. I think we went 19 years before we had any problems. Most recently, it backed up one winter day, I remember bailing it out with a pot, dumping the sludge in my backyard. Had to have basement carpet "Emergency" cleaned, it's been okay since. I am very careful about using water. I often do laundry at the laundromat so as not to add anything to my cesspool. We do take showers and use dishwasher regularly.
